EMI has been releasing a great many ambitious box sets lately, some devoted to specific composers with as many as 30 CDs, but this dwarfs them all, and I'm just talking about volume one, the orchestral collection. Was i glad to see it done? Certainly! Do I heartily wish that a little more care had gone into the planning and execution? Heartily! The idea is a fine one, assembling all of Karajan's official EMI orchestral recordings in one package, and remastering many of them once again. after listening to the dharma, inspired by jack kerouac's late writings, i had a look at my copy of adams' on the transmigration of souls for the compositional dates, the two pieces having much in common as to stand as companion pieces. which is to say there is a deepening of a style at play in adams' work.

the second recording, my father knew charles ives, owes much to ives, particularly the musical tension, adams, like ives, never lets the listener forget that marching band music on celebrated holidays is in memory of men and women who fought in wars.

An Organ Blaster Sampler

I am by no standards an expert on music, let alone organ music. I just purchased this CD because I love the sound of the organ, and wanted an album from a mix of artists before I started branching out to single composers. I would also consider myself an audiophile, only listening to high quality music with my portable headphone amplifier and Sennheiser HD-555's. Let me tell you, the quality is perfect, and the music is incredible! Such a full sound, it's *almost* as good as sitting in audience, only lacking the full body experience of organ music. I would recommend this to anybody looking to get a foot into the world of organ music.

Excellent story of Tchaikovsky. All the classics with an engrossing story. Not a dull moment. Fun Fact: Did you know that his name is really spelled: TSCHAIKOWSKI (Polish name spelled in a Polish way, the Russians wanted him all to themselves,so slowly and through the years, the name was Russified, and not by TSCHAIKOWSKI). CD is Great!

There are nineteen concertos in this collection, twelve of which are for one or more harpsichords. The remaining seven are concertos for various other instruments including violin, oboe, etc. A potential buyer should be aware that many of Bach's harpsichord concertos are re-arranged versions of these other concertos - and in some cases both versions are in this collection. For example, the three violin concertos (including the "double" concerto) are presented in both their original and harpsichord arrangements. Perhaps the most famous piece among Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin BWV 1001-1006 is Chaconne Partita number 2 BWV 1004. On its own, it already stands as a testament to Bach's genius. With Nathan Milstein at the bow, the entire set has become essential. Milstein communicates profound understanding of the composition and thorough mastery of the instrument in his playing of these Bach masterpieces for the violin. On this occasion, he is without equal. I consider it a rare treat to have the sound quality of faithful analog recording remastered in digital as it lends the music more conviction. Particularly this kind of music. Great music. Great playing. Great recording. This set is completed by the other CD of Milstein's recordings of Bach's Sonatas for the Unaccompanied Violin.

Essential Tchaikovsky

There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works.

The recording is a fantastic snap shot of a truly great artist at the top of his game. The Lp version is a bit more lush in terms of overall sound. I wish someone would remaster this to 180 gram vinyl. This set is a wonderful opportunity to experience music playing beyond belief!

this collection deserves more than 5 stars.peter maag and the philharmonica hungarica are in top form.this is the best ever of schubert's fifth and eigth i have ever listened to.it is not karl bohm or leonard bernstein or george szell or lorin maazel.
truly the hungarians inspired by maag easily beat all the other top orchestras.
the orchestral texture is transparent with a perfect balance among the string sections ,the woodwind and the brass sections.peter maag obviously loves this music and brings out the heavenly beauty ,the pathos and the monumental dramatic quality of these works.
just listen to schubert's fifth second movement which ends with a heart rending cello phrase.
it is a shame that the well established record companies have not thought it fit to record more of peter ... Read More:
