Mozart: The Violin Sonatas

Mozart is my most favorite composer, Perlman my most favorite violinist, and Barenboim my second most favoriate pianist (Vladimir Ashkenazy being my first). When you have all three together, even more spendid!

I also recommend Barenboim's Mozart Piano Sonotas. I personally think it is the best Mozart Piano Sonata set out there.

All those famous pianists nowadays must listen to these incredibly sublime recordings of Beethoven concetos played by Leon Fleisher, and better re-think what it means to play music.

The lavinshing richness of the tones he produces is beyond description not to mention the technical brilliance. The slow movement of Emperor Concerto, for example, has almost other-worldly beauty, and you forget everything else. Since I came to know this pianist through the stunning Brahms Concerti recording, I've been struck again and again by his amazing ability to breathe life into music. This recording has really helped me in preparing to perform one of the Mendelssohn concertos myself; great sound quality on the actual recording as well as the superb technique exhibited makes this album one of my favorites!

Bach for Babies

This is absolutely my favorite CD that we bought for our baby! We've bought quite a few classical-music-for-baby compilations, and this is far and away the best. The music is fun, flirty, stimulating, sweet, and beautifully performed. It's not syrupy, dumbed-down, or played on electronic instruments like some of those other compilations. We listen to it all the time. I now buy this as a baby shower gift for everyone I know!

The Dvorak Album

Yo Yo Ma has the perfect tender and romantic feel for Dvorac. Unfortunately he is not a powerful performer. He is relatively subdued and that is okay with this music. The fault on the very first selection, the concerto, is the recording. It is though he is in the middle of the orchestra playing with everyone else. There is very little presence given to him by the engineer in the mix down. This is very unfortunate. The listener must pick out the lead performer.
I used to 'bury' musicians when they weren't up to par for the good of the whole recording. Everyone including the musican were grateful for this. However, Yo Yo was not having a bad day, and you never bury the lead. Shame on you guys in the booth.
