I got the Coldplay 2003 DVD as a birthday present in '04. Coldplay's my favorite band, so you can imagine my excitement. Back in the days, I never thought I could ever be in a real concert of the band, I lived too far away from any place they toured.
Almost four years later, I still think the DVD was the best concert in my life. That is, taking into consideration that I went to see them, against all odds, in NYC in 2006. It's not that the concert was bad, it was one of the best days in my life. It's that to me, the DVD is so good that I can't get enough of it.
The band plays perfectly, the connection with the crowd is real, the choice of songs is fantastic, the sound is epic, the transitions that go along with songs, including ... Read More:

This CD improves with repeated listening. Several pieces tend to begin quiety then increase to a larger sound. I like it better every time I play it. The pieces definitely pick up towards the end, from track 7 -10 particularly. Singer/songwriter Laswell plays piano, acoustic and electric guitar, harmonium, bells, organ and bass -- variety of talents, huh?
Tracks:
1 -- It's been a year: mellow acoustic guitar 7/10
2 -- That it moves: has a radio play sound, many instruments with some sweeping melodies 8/10
3 -- The one I love: Reflective lyrics with slow, driving melody 8/10
4 -- Comes and goes: gentle acoustic guitar, piano mixed in, love the lyrics (this one's for the lonely/the ones that seek and find/only ... Read More:

Beautiful soprano, dreamy vocals, witty lyrics and an ambient electronica feel. Sort of lounge music with an edge. Part of what I like about it is that it's a little bit hard to describe.

The Black Keys must have travelled in a time machine from 1969 to today, having listened to Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker, then heard what the Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds did with it, adding some heavy drums that sound like baseball bats pounding ... I just couldn't believe my ears when I first heard this, then hearing this amazing album, one of the best discoveries I've made lately. While I'm shocked the Keys haven't made it big (not so much considering the crap that does) I'm kinda glad, that way they won't get corrupted by stardom, like so many good ones have. My wife who doesn't like anything newer than Skynyrd was moving to it. That says it all,

I caught the track "Vulnerable" on the radio recently, and was for sure that Chris Carrabba must have started a new band, returning to his more acoustic days of The Swiss Army Romance. I got home, checked out the band on-line and realized that this was a totally different person. I honestly do not see how people get away w/ completely stealing someone's vocal styling, approach to harmonies, vocal mannerisms/enunciations, lyrical styling, and overall CONCEPT of a band!! Second hand bands are always robbing original acts of such things (just look at bands like Creed, Puddle of Mud, etc), but I don't know the last time I heard an act that was doing it this blatantly and with such "emotional" intent. I feel sorry for people that hear something like this and feel ... Read More:

This is my first DeVotchKa cd, and at first I was extremely impressed. These are impeccable musicians with a lot of creativity, and they successfully combine many different styles of music. The only problem is the vocals.
Their lead singer sticks to one style of crooning, and after a while it gets very grating. In the future they would be better served by adding more variation to the vocals. I would love to hear them work with some guest vocalists, or maybe add another full time, female vocalist to the band.
Overall I recommend this cd, although the vocals are very limited and prevent the band from reaching their full potential.

I learned about this group/CD in an NPR interview, of all things. I liked what I heard and ordered the CD - A great impulse decision! I fell in love with the songs the first time I played through the CD. I'm not a music snob or anything, so I can't think of anything clever to say about it - I just like it!
