I love his music, but this CD would not play correctly. I tried it on 4 different CD players. It played like the old vinyl when they would get scratched. Was unbelievable because I can't return it after opening it. Not buying any more CD's from Amazon. I didn't want to give it any stars, but had to in order to send this review.

Animal behaviorists have done some studies showing harp music is good at calming animals, especially cats. My cat was very skittish and unhappy as a result of very loud construction work next door and all other efforts to calm her down had not been totally successful. I got this and she (and I, if you must know) relaxed immediately.
It is a beautiful sounding album. (And the bahaviorists have a point. Cats do seem to hear vibes in harp music we can't. It was like instant prozac for her.)

Previously, a reviewer wrote:
"Karajan in 1962 wanted to perform Beethoven in a modern way compared to the overtly spiritual, often very slow, heavy, and rubato-laden style of the past in Germany. ... in the last movement Karajan takes the vocal line faster...
"By comparison, Karajan wasn't as hectically fast or intense as Toscanini,..."
I don't wish to take anything away from Karajan's technical mastery, his orchestra's wonderful sound, or his "smoothness." It's all good.
But folks should understand the real reason Karajan's original recorded version of this work, at least in terms of its tempos, comes out as the previous reviewer accurately observed. He kept to his version in subsequent recordings, ... Read More:

This DVD is brilliant in every respect. Faultless in its production and in the performance of the conductor, orchestra and pianist. (for the first two concertos, Zimerman conducts from the piano). It's a joy to listen to and watch. There's nothing more to say. If you appreciate genius buy it, you will not be disappointed.

I'm not sure where to put my review. I actually purchased the SACD version of this album, but as I don't have an SACD player, what I'm listening to is the CD version (i.e., the product on this page).
It seems as though most (all?) of the reviews of this disc are from individuals who were already familiar with and fond of Bartok's music at the time of purchase. My perspective is a bit different, and I hope will be helpful to those who are unfamiliar with Bartok and are deciding whether or not they wish to try some new music.
Although I have listened to classical music for some time, when I bought this disk I was largely unfamiliar with Bartok's work. In fact, I mostly listened to pre-20th century classical music, and had mixed ... Read More:

Every track on this disc is as much fun to listen to as it obviously was for the BSO to perform. "Sabre Dance" is utterly scorching, and the lyrics for "Honey Man" and "One More Night With You" are fun and witty. It all swings, but the particular standout for me is "For Lisa," Beethoven's "Fur Elise" turned into a sweet tribute to the Quintette du Hot Club de France.

After years of searching for my favorite version of the Horn concertos I found this one thanks to the recommendation of the penguin guide (they're good for some things y'know).
I've heard about a dozen versions and never settled on any of them (even the Brain and the other Tuckwell's).
This version should be the best example to Tuckwell's art. He brings out the depth and range of the instrument while staying commited to beauty and life.
The recording actually sounds like a live recording or like they didn't talk about anything at all...just went in there like geniuses and taped them down in one session!
Tuckwell and Marriner are truly insipred in this recording. Tuckwell is daring, strong, and passionate...Marriner ... Read More:

Sound quality might be lacking, however the soul of the performance is what counts. There is a great feel to the opening track. Each time I hear it, it completely changes any mood I'm in. The orchestra and chorus breathes together, and Klemperer did a fine job on these tracks. If your not nuts about this, try Karajan's earlier recordings.
*It seems ridiculous that people will write reviews to argue like children with each other on this website.

We got this audio book series for our daughter when she was 8 years old. She is 12 now and she is still listening and loving those audio books.
The combination between radio-theater with classical music is perfect.
