I have been thrilled seeing Florez in operas, his voice is powerful and pure; his acting ability is unmatchable. But his CD's are produced very purely. He sings too loud, it is not pleasing to the ear. I have seen audiences move Florez to tears with ovations; he is amazing. But the people who produced this CD apparently did not listen to it before selling it to the public. I found it offensive.

Since returning from a trip to China, I have become very interested in the music and the entire culture and history of the Far East. To an American, it seems like such an exotic and mysterious world. Given the formidable languages and the vastness of it all, I can only say that I can only hope to acquire a superficial understanding.
As always, the versatile Yo-Yo Ma is quite soulful and technically brilliant in his musical exploration of the "Silk Road". The music, to me, captures the feeling of Asia. The liner notes are very educational in providing a context to the project.
I find Asian music to be very different from our "Western" traditions, but given time and an even chance, I think that you will find this CD to be ... Read More:

Every track on this disc is as much fun to listen to as it obviously was for the BSO to perform. "Sabre Dance" is utterly scorching, and the lyrics for "Honey Man" and "One More Night With You" are fun and witty. It all swings, but the particular standout for me is "For Lisa," Beethoven's "Fur Elise" turned into a sweet tribute to the Quintette du Hot Club de France.

Golijov is all the rage nowadays. Hailed by the New Yorker and the New York Times as the next big thing in classical music, he has all the right credentials to appeal to our politically-correct aesthetic. He's Argentinian, Jewish and American all at the same time. We love the idea of mixed cultural influences, I suppose because it satisfies our liberal longing for a world where everyone gets along just fine.
I have enjoyed other Golijov productions, although I doubt his ultimate talent. He's not up there with the greats. In this collection, I realized that he is a superb collector of other peoples' themes and inspirations -- rather than a bone fide creator of his own. There is one movement, superbly sung by Dawn Upshaw, where the setting is just lovely. ... Read More:

First, a bit of trivia. Cal Schenkl once told me that the fabulous Burnt Weeie Sandwich album cover was actually originally commissioned for an Eric Dolphy release. Now that IS interesting considering that Dolphy was one of Zappa's early influences. Ok. On with the review.
Burnt Weenie Sandwich along with Weasels Ripped My Flesh were put together by Zappa shortly after he called the band out to his house in Laurel Canyon to announce he was disbanding The Mothers. Both releases are definitely worth owning. Both would have been "assembled" during the period Zappa was working on Hot Rats. Both releases are made up of live and studio tracks recorded between 1967 and 1969. Weenie is more focused on some of Zappa's formal ensemble writing while Weasels has ... Read More:

I'm not sure where to put my review. I actually purchased the SACD version of this album, but as I don't have an SACD player, what I'm listening to is the CD version (i.e., the product on this page).
It seems as though most (all?) of the reviews of this disc are from individuals who were already familiar with and fond of Bartok's music at the time of purchase. My perspective is a bit different, and I hope will be helpful to those who are unfamiliar with Bartok and are deciding whether or not they wish to try some new music.
Although I have listened to classical music for some time, when I bought this disk I was largely unfamiliar with Bartok's work. In fact, I mostly listened to pre-20th century classical music, and had mixed feelings about the limited ... Read More:
