The studio disc "Angel Voices" represents a well-crafted cross-section of Libera's work across the majority of its 24 year history; a "greatest hits" disc. If you're brand new to Libera, start right here: this disc has the majority of their most well-known work from performances and albums past. For old hands, there are some new cuts sure to become part of Libera's lasting repertoire. This album's track list is NOT the same as that for the live recording made at Leiden: Angel Voices: Libera In Concert
Purists: Go away. The group actively promotes themselves as a unique style of their own (the boys' own words, not some publicist's blurb), so they won't fit into prefab Genre Boxes. Libera is made up of schoolchildren united by their ... Read More:

Many envision Christmas when they hear Messiah spoken in reference to Handel's classical craftsmanship. I, personally, envision all year round listening rapture.
Handel's composition details various epics of Christ's life--His birth, ministry, crucifixion, resurrection and eventual Messianic millennial rule. You behold through Handel's orchestrated psalms, the Old Testament prophesies concerning Messiah encompassed with the New Testament fulfillments.
Handel's Messiah is remarkable as it is the inspired Scripture set to orchestration. Messiah is absent of Handel's words; only holding his masterful musical scores.
When you insert these CDs, Biblical truths arise in illustrious, serenading ecstasy. You immediately ... Read More:

This Cd made me a Cello fan. It is relaxing "a lo Glass", (as usual). Before, I considered the violoncello an inferior
entity within the violin family, but now I have great respect for both, the instrument and Phillip. To me: definitely a 5 star.

P.S. I'm not a professional music analyst just in case I may have disappointed any one for not getting into the technical analysis of the CD.

I am not a trained musician and cannot speak in such terms. However, I can speak to the emotion I felt as I listened to this music. I find this work particularly moving from the near silence of the beginning of the first movement to the plaintive prayer to Our Lady in the last. To me this is a piece of quiet power; the gradual crescendo of sound to Dawn Upshaw's first soaring soprano and gradual decrescendo to near silence in the first movement, the soulful prayer to the Holy Mother in the second movement. In the third movement where one might expect anger I heard the despairing lament and final quiet resolution. I do not speak Polish but am familiar with the sounds of the language. Dawn Upshaw sings with such clarity that I was able to follow the Polish ... Read More:

Release Date October 16, 2007
I haven't been enthusiastic about this ensemble of women singers, Trio Mediaeval, on their previous CDs, singing potpourris of chant and polyphony. Their voices are more individually interesting than those of the better-known Anonymous Four, but they've 'schmalzed' up the reverb and used other little gimmicks to trick themselves out as 'spiritual-sounding.' On this CD, however, they've tapped into their Norwegian roots, utilized the special vocal quality of Norwegian women singers, caught all the trollish mystery of ancient runes and isolated fiords. We Swedes depend on our Samii and Finnish singers for equally "weird" and heathenish vocal effects, but we can't match the Norwegians. I've never heard this music before except when kayaking farm to farm on one of the ... Read More:

This CD mostly delivered what was expected of it. The only critique I have is that some of the tempos could have been cleaner, and that it should be cross-referenced by the other composers besides J. S. Bach.

The old LP of this recording was my introduction to the Bartok Music for Strings Percussion and Celeste when I was a kid in the 1950s. What a treat to find it again after all these years! The clarity, precision and musicality are unsurpassed by any I have heard since. It even blows away the live performances I recently enjoyed with Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Berlin as well as Esa-Peka Solonen with the LA Phil. This is a definitive performance. No question about it.
