This record stands as the quintesential piece of work from the manchester based band. From the opening "age of consent" to the pop mastery of "the village" to the icy futuristic prophecy known as "blue monday" , they consistantly push the envelope of what could be considered pop music. Since the day I was introduced to this band, say...back in the 80's...I've always loved them. They've always had their own style and there are few bands today that can even touch their creative blends of goth, new wave and punk. I highly recommend this best of CD.

It was a friend's party, senior year in high school, a hot June night after graduation 1980. A girl I knew arrived in a black cat-suit, dominatrix boots, and a purple telephone extension cord wrapped around her slim waist as a belt. I kissed somebody--I don't remember who. And this crazy, goofball tune pounded away on the host's JVC...

People seemed to know "Rock Lobster" from the year before. I guess I'd missed it. But listening to this album a week later, I found other tunes stuck out more, and one's stayed with me ever since. Not a huge fan, but I have all of MCR's major releases, and was looking forward to a live DVD. Unfortunately, for the main event (the Mexico City concert), it's a disappointment. Gerald's voice is very weak, especially early, and as the better songs (imho) are all on the first half of the set, it gives a very flat feel. The band is fine, and the concert was clearly high-budget, but the vocals you get on the studio album seem to come through in small bits and then it's whisper-like, almost talking as much as singing. Too bad.

The other DVD track with the off-message show that was just a band was a lot less theatrical and less interesting to watch, but much more appealing to listen to. Somewhere in the middle could be a great show (or, I guess a terrible one); it's a shame that they ... Read More:

Is this supposed to be a Norma Jean album? I don't care about their musical maturation or evolution - I want hard screaming metal. This is not that. This album borders on emo compared to other NJ stuff.
