It's good to hear some more music from the early 90's that was able to escape grunge's tentacles. There are a few elements in there that make it comparable to that genre, but it's really closer to alternative rock that got more popular later on. I feel like the album might be a little longer than it needs to, and some of the songs are a little similar, but nothing in particular felt like it needed to be changed or cut. A lot of the songs sounded similar to stuff that came out later, which points to it being pretty influential to modern rock. A song like "Today" for example, sounds like something I've heard fifty times before, but might be the first time it was made. Sort of like Nevermind, I respect it more than I liked it, but I did like it ... Read More:

this is a good CD if you're a casual listener looking for Pink Floyd's best songs. less expensive and less cumbersome than buying their complete set and not bogged down by lesser songs. if you're a hard core fan you will probably find this CD lacking in continuity. Pink Floyd albums were not simply a collection of singles they were a coherent continuous package. that continuity is lost when compiling a greatest hits album.

The first time I heard Trent Reznor and NIN, he was still opening for other bands. All I can say is: WOW. This was LIVE industrial music, so good that it didn't need a studio to clean it up. What others have written about this being the most "pop-like" album is true, but that's only in relative terms. It's definitely not top-40 material. The subject matter is classic for this kind of music (heartbreak, bitterness, anger), but different from the old-school industrial 80's sound. I felt a lot of other (pre-NIN) bands were somewhat alientating upon first-listen: once I knew the songs, I liked them, but they had to grow on me. Not so with NIN. They're instantly likeable, I'd even say loveable, if that weren't the most inappropriate word for this ... Read More:

I can't say much more than what's already been said by everyone - fantastic piece of work, indeed. But after downloading, I was disappointed to find that "It's Been Awhile" was not the explicit version, like the album advertises. I wrote in and it was explained to me that they don't have the explicit version of this song for download - just the radio friendly version. I got a credit, and that's fine, but wanted to give everyone a heads up on this.

Back in the very early days of what was the called Rock & Roll, guys like Elvis and Bill Haley and the Comets, "Rock" was kind of a big band boogie kind of affair. For me at least it wasn't really Rock until a little trio from Texas came along called Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Rock was pared down to its bones, a bass, a guitar and drums, with edgy lyrics that people didn't know exactly what to do with.
In that fine tradition came this little band from Texas, and a new generation of Tex Rock was born. After its release, Tres Hombres was the one album that always got played at any party I went to in High School, and all the guys thought of themselves as Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers. At one dance at my school, the band was playing "La ... Read More:

There is 13 video clips on this CD/DVD. For example Hot in the City, Rebel yell, Dancing with myself and so on. The video quality on a few of the clips could be better. But I put this down to time when they were recorded back in the early 1980s.
The DVD format is NTSC not PAL, this may or may not be a problem. Other then that there is a good number of his songs on this best of collection.

Coming out at the same time as Use Your Illusion I in one of the biggest days in metal history this album contains a swathe of hard rock and metallic styles. For my mind part one is the more metallic and this the more maudlin of the dynamic duo. But as I said it has a range of styles like Civil War which is the sort of thing that a band with expanding horizons would do, numbers like the visceral Get In The Ring, the bouncy though metallic Shotgun Blues and Breakdown (a personal fave) and sicker more cerebral stuff like the sneering disdain in Pretty Tied Up. We also get an industrial sicko in the brief My World which speaks to a certain doom obsessed juvenile brain wave but is certainly no less valid for that.
My reasons for giving this album only ... Read More:

I listen to "Starman", then I listen to it again, then I get addicted to that song, then I can't stop listening to it. I will listen to it 10 or 15 times in a row. "Starman" is indeed waiting in the sky, I believe.
