This is one of those albums that you just end up being really glad you bought. It has everything, from the upbeat danceable tunes, to the slower, creepy, moody cymbalon-dominated tunes.
Occasionally there is some bass and percussion on this disc, but for the most part it is just clarinet and cymbalon. Cymbalon being a hammered-dulcimer (basically the santoor of northern India, santur of Iran, etc...). There are also two tracks with Statman on mandolin, and one solo cymbalon track.
Whether you're an established fan, or just looking for your first Jewish cd, this is an excellent choice either way. I would even say that I think this is a better first choice than some of the legendary masters' albums, such as Tarras and Brandwein, ... Read More:

I've had this CD since 2000 when I bought it in the Middle East. The music is exceptional, very easy to get into. This makes listening more of an experience. The instrumentals and vocals are extraordinary.
If you're drawn to dance, Middle East influences, with high caliber talent give this CD a try (or buy the MP3 download)this music never gets old due to the extraordinary talent behind it.

I enjoy most chanting 'works' across the board, but I cannot recommend this one. You should only buy after you have sampled the CD because this one is not that great. It probably does excite historians and some intellectuals but purchase with caution. It won't be missed.

An excellent introduction to the rich music that the Middle East provides the world. Some first class performances by musical masters who really put their heart into their playing. A must have!!!

I loved Arabesque and Arabian Travels, but this is not trance. This is more like Arabian pop music. The vocals are irritating to me. Sting even shows up on one track. If you are looking for world trance, or something to chill out or relax to, forget this one.

Very good CD especially if you have bought the DVD The Art of the Drum solo. You do get a bonus CD with the DVD which is a lovely surprise, but the music used in the dance taught, is not the music on the free CD boo! Smart move from the manufacturers, Track 4 on Wasson Pharaon, however ,is very similar to the music used... which makes it easier for you to to perform the dance taught on the DVD....The other tracks on the CD are also excellent .....very suitable for tabla or dramatic dancing....and of course to shimmy shimmy

The title alone and that it is a "Rough Guide" convinced me the album would not disappoint. Call it instinct or gut intuition, I was right! The selections were made by Dan Rosenberg whose background in world music is exceptional and his travels around the world on a quest to capture the best tradtional/folk music is the envy of anyone who loves this musical genre. The whole CD is a musical feast for the ears ... The music spans a wide range of different Israeli styles.
The most appealing to this listener is called, mizrachi, which is from Yemen and Iraq. Ofra Haza has a fantastic CD, "Yemenite Songs" from which "Ode Le-Eli" was chosen, her soulful haunting voice will echo in your mind, long after the CD stops. What a shame she died at the peak of her career. The influences of Yemen, ... Read More:
