Until I heard this CD, I was unaware that Edith Piaf had ever recorded any songs in English. I was aware, however that she didn't learn much English until very late in life. Someday, I hope to have heard everything she ever recorded. She died when I was 21, but I have enjoyed hearing her sing from the time I was about 12, maybe earlier. One does not need to understand the words in her songs to appreciate the power and feeling she puts into all her work; the meaning is clear enough.

"Bachata" is a party music that comes from the Dominican Republic, and since the 1980s it has become a globally popular dance style... This disc explores bachata's roots in the early 1960s to the early '80s, when it was still a primarily acoustic form, mixing the heart-piercing sentimentality of the bolero with dazzling, multi-layered guitar work similar to the Cuban guajira and Puerto Rican jibaro music... This is amazingly rich, satisfying music -- one of the finest historical Latin albums of the decade, packed with powerful performances from rare, hard-to-find records. Highly recommended! (DJ Joe Sixpack/Slipcue)

Wow. Really disappointed in this one. It ALL sounds alike, boring beats, and both CDs focus on a house/dance beat. We count on Buddha Bar NOT to produce the same old house tunes found in all those other compilations. Unlike one of the other reviewers, I didn't really find any tracks that stood out. If you like thumpy background music at your parties, this is a great one for you. Nobody will mind talking over these tracks.

Wonderful offering of distinct rhythms from the Garifuna culture of Central America. Andy himself participated in more danceable, electric Garifuna music (such as Punta) earlier in his career. However, this offering is more refined, still very rhythmical of course, but more spiritual and carved out of his respect for his culture and roots. A wonderful album.

Radio stations don't exactly beat you over the head with this guy. I got this album because some audiophile site listed this as a very well recorded album that was also good music, and whaddya know, not only is it a very clean recording, the music's awesome too! My first Lovett album, but not my last. Lock the door, unplug the phone, pour a drink, and turn it up.

Yes, everyone does mention the crowd noise in the background. You can hear it when sampling the music, it's overwhelming, but I still couldn't resist buying it because it just sounds like everyone is having such a good time. I think that's the "hook." I may use it at my Oktoberfest, but for those who like to sing along, or even attempt to, this will prove difficult to do with this CD unless you already know the words and melody. I would say you hear 25% voice and 75% crowd. If they could have only reversed that, this CD would be perfect for me. But if that's what your looking for, Prost!

Putumayo's "Cafe Cubano" is the latest in the world music's cafe series, and so far,the best. While Italian&French Cafe are bland collections, the Cuban one is a savory blend of old and new music. The compilation is like a mojito-a cold limeade with the extra kick of rum. There's even a recipe--a mojito dipping sauce made with lime, lemon&orange juices.
"Cafe Cubano" opens with Jose Conde y Ola Fresca's "El Chacal",a jazzy critique of Che Guevara. Conde is an alum of Boston's Berklee College of Music, but one wonders if this song will go over well in nearby Cambridge, with its Proletarian thrift shop&its Communist-themed bar. Ignacio Carrillo's "Lagrimas Negras" is a melancholy ode to unrequited love. Pedro Luis Ferrer,a critic of the Cuban ... Read More:

I first starting listing to Lisa Gerrard because of a neighbor who thought the music in Gladiator was emotionally outstanding. We had some discussion as to what language she may be singing in and I did some research to find out that it is a language that Lisa Gerrard made up herself beginning around age 12. Her way of talking to God. It is a beautiful CD and wonderful music just to relax to and feel the flow.
