When the music started, I stopped; and I didn't get up again until the last tune had run its course. I have to tell you the first time I listened to this CD, it was like angels were singing. It brought tears to my eyes. I've always loved O Holy Night and theirs is a beautiful rendition of it. There are tracks that I find myself skipping over at times but all in all it's a gorgeous Christmas CD.

I think Israel Kamakawiwo'ole ( the fearless eyes the bold face) had a magic touch in his voice and in the way he was able to improvise and rearrange all the songs he sang. the story behind the medley that changed the world is quite interesting ..it is on his biography that Amazon sells as well called: IZ voice of the people. in short: he called the studio in the middle of the night saying he had something in mind and he absolutely had to record it .. he was so persistent and sweet that the producer agreed so he went to the studio, sat down with his Ukulele played 4 songs ( over the rainbow/wonderful world was one of them) and then he said: now I'm tired.. and he left... and that is the version we all love... ... I was curious to hear this CD given Bruni's notoriety over the years. Overall it's a dull outing. The production is virtually identical from song to song, with Bruni's average voice (sounds like a French Dido) mixed far forward with almost no reverb in every song. And there's nary a backing vocal or harmony track anywhere on this CD. Just the same presentation song after song. Was the producer asleep?

And the writing? Well the first tune, "Ma Jeunesse", grabbed me until I realized it's a virtual carbon copy of the Beatles' "For No One", down to the French horn solo. (Paul & co. should sue for copyright infringement.) Beyond that, I didn't hear any great melodies here.

This was my first exposure to these ladies - I was totally blown away by their clarity. I can't fault any of them at all. Mairead, the fiddler, has such a distinctive and beautiful style of playing I find myself (not literally) throwing rocks at other fiddlers. I don't believe she ever hits a bad note. The orchestra is also first-rate.

Ever since I read a synopsis of her life and music career in the newspaper a year ago, I was intrigued. I went to see her in a small local theater, and since then I was hooked. She mixes African and Spanish rythms with jazz and Latin beats to create an amazing sound. Her voice is captivating and penetrating. She portrays herself through her music.

One doesn't have to be Cajun or from Louisiana to enjoy this music, but for those of us who are, the latest work from this extraordinary group of young Cajun artists speaks to our soul. Their synergy, creativity, instrumental mastery, and heart bring Cajun music and culture alive. Living in Texas, I don't get to hear them perform live nearly as much as I'd like, but in the meantime, Cow Island Hop will do just fine. With this group leading the next generation telling our stories, the Cajun culture is indeed in good hands. Great album!
