I purchased 3 Steel Drum CD's at the same time. This one is the most authentic of the ones I bought. Steel drums were originally made from the ends of 55 gallon drums. The "artist" pounded out the end in various spots to the thickness needed to get the "right" tone, so each was somewhat unique. Later, manufacturers standardized the methods and materials to get a crisper, more reproducible sound. This CD sounds like the "real" thing made by island craftsman. It features a variety of local artists and provides a sense of the islands.

I only decided to give this cd a try because I found out Alberto Salas worked on it. I have admired his work on Raul Malo's "Today" and Los Super Seven "Canto". His piano style is very fresh and exciting...every musician on this cd is his equal! What a great band. The music is gorgeous, the production is excellent.
Can't really pick a favorite track as all are amazing!

I first heard this CD while vacationing in the Dominican Republic, having dinner in an open air restaurant next to the crashing waves of the Caribbean. I asked the proprietor what was he playing. It was so smooth, jazzy, happy, and romantic.

This excellent documentary about the group, Irekare, shows clearly that Chucho Valdes is the true father of Afro-Cuban Jazz. With insightful interviews of many of the musicians in the ground breaking group, combined with stellar performances filmed over the years since the group formed, this video is a must have for anyone who loves good music. The members of the band speak gratefully about their opportunity to play alongside the best Cuban musicians and their enthusiasm is infectious. I loved this and will watch it again and again.
