I had a copy of this when I was a young man back in the '60s.It was on vinyl of course and didn't survive the many playings I gave it. I believe it was done in a very unpretentious way highlighting an extremely talented young folk singer. She of course went on to become a singing superstar but this is the definitive Joan Baez for me.

The singer's voice on this cd is incredible. I had never heard of the group, went to see them at the UMASS Fine Arts Center and decided to buy the cd. ($20 at the concert, $10 at Amazon!) They were awesome in person with lots of stories and dancing to accompany but the music does speak for itself also!

My only disappointment was Amazon. Not up to their usual great selling process. I actually ordered 3 cds then opened the package to wrap gifts and only found one, with a broken case! That was a bummer but the music did not disappoint. If you ever get a chance to see the ladies in person, do not pass it up!

When people are talking about great clawhammer banjo players they mention Charlie Poole and others, but seldom have a heard Ralph Stanley's name. It is a shame, and one listen to this cd will tell you why. He is as underrated a clawhammer banjo player as Rob McCoury is for bluegrass banjo. Solid playing with an interesting frailing hand!
Take a listen for yourself, and see if I am right.

I echo the comments of previous reviewers. I am an avid Nickel Creek fan and am on the prowl for more "newgrass" music. Chris Thile's music on this album is clean and impressive - in the same style as his work with Nickel Creek, but with no vocals. Highly recommended - you won't be disappointed.
