I really like this CD. The music was very uplifting and soothing at the same time...I play it for my fetal son every night before bed with headphones that I stick onto my belly. I don't know if it's doing anything, but I can hear it too and it almost puts me to sleep :)

I take my hat off to Schiff's 'Hammerklavier' Sonata, which takes off from the first bar with real passion -- a rare thing, in my experience, for this chilly pianist. He far outdoes Brendel and Gilels in imagination and breadth of vision throughout this massive work. Ricther could raise the hair on your head with his almost violent attack and intense concentration -- with him, the 'Hammerklavier' was a matter of life and death -- but Schiff isn't out to recreate Beethoven's soul struggles. He gives us a clear, honest perspective on Bethoven's wild imaginative flights while maintaining dramatic tension. If only ECMs piano sound weren't so pingy on top and wooden at the bottom. The World's Favorite Piano Music

If you a piano student, your teacher will probably assign you at least half of the compositions in this CD. You need to hear how they should be played. This is a wonderful CD to use to help you learn the pieces. These piano selections are not the "World's Favorites" for nothing - they are memorable and enjoyable for young and old alike. I love this CD.

I haven't been enthusiastic about this ensemble of women singers, Trio Mediaeval, on their previous CDs, singing potpourris of chant and polyphony. Their voices are more individually interesting than those of the better-known Anonymous Four, but they've 'schmalzed' up the reverb and used other little gimmicks to trick themselves out as 'spiritual-sounding.' On this CD, however, they've tapped into their Norwegian roots, utilized the special vocal quality of Norwegian women singers, caught all the trollish mystery of ancient runes and isolated fiords. We Swedes depend on our Samii and Finnish singers for equally "weird" and heathenish vocal effects, but we can't match the Norwegians. Again, breaking my rule against reviewing CDs, for music that is truly exceptional. This is the CD that I play most often, outstripping #2 (Verdi's "Don Carlos", if you must know) by a factor of three to one. Lauridsen has been compared to influences ranging from Brahms to Arvo Pärt - he is surely the preeminent American composer of choral music working today.

All of the works featured on this CD: "lux Aterna", "Chansons des Roses", and "Mid-Winter Songs" are ethereally beautiful. Personally, it's the "Chansons des Roses", which set several of Rilke's 'rose poems' to music, that leave me breathless every time.

This is an extraordinary CD, and one which I highly recommend.
