I am truly a beginner, and this DVD was exactly what I needed. Annie Duke has a great demeanor, and she clearly explains the basics of Texas Hold'em in a manner that shows why this game is so popular. She has fun with her topic, clearly explains the basics, and gets into a fair amount of strategy. She discusses things like why one should or should not bet on a given hand--especially depending on their position at the table. She also discusses etiquette, and goes into great detail on a wide variety of "what ifs" that can take place during a game.

Highly recommended.

Aptly named, Maiden Voyage features tracks that are nearly ideal for beginning jazz improvisers. The chord changes are not overly quick, nor are the tempi on the tunes. Like most of the packages that Jamey Aebersold has put together over the years, Maiden Voyage works best for players of melodic instruments (flute, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, guitar, etc.). This is useful for guitarists and pianists who want to practice their comping, as it is for bass players. The only problem with using the basic version of any of Aebersold's book/CD packages for comping or working out bass lines is that there is no soloist to react to. Most of my college friends have moved off to different cities, and it's quite a haul to visit them. Music in the car is nice, but I always get the urge to sing! That's why I enjoy this CD so much. First we are treated to somewhat simplified arrangements of ten great songs, ranging from classics like Lady and the Tramp's "Bella Note" to more current songs like "Friend Like Me" from Aladdin. Each is performed by an artist who does an excellent job of enunciating to help the budding singer hear the words and where they go (the lyrics in the booklet help too!). The next ten tracks are the same songs, but without the lead vocals. Simple, elegant, fun.

An hilarious poke at the fab four with talent themselves, the Rutles took the late 1970's by storm. Song writer Neil Inness' well crafted wit is manifested in the Beatle sound alikes. The songs may sound familiar, that's because Inness played around with the same chords the Beatles did to construct his melodies. Good stuff.

As a singer, I'm always looking for new (or old) material and in this wonderful CD, Sentimental Journey, by the incomparable Miss Beegie Adair, I've found fabulous new presentations of matchless WW2 songs. There are 12 songs on this CD and I've taken 6 of them for my own interpretation. These are the nostalgic songs that our parents danced and romanced to in the 40's and they're just as beautiful today. Beegie brings them to life again, not that they ever went away, but to listen to her brilliant playing of I'm Getting Sentimental Over You; Sentimental Journey; It's been a Long,Long Time; You'll Never know and I'll Be Seeing You is a very moving experience.
