This is a masterful performance by the great Vladimir Ashkenazy of Chopin's favourite piano works. If you love Chopin's music and Ashkenazy's magic touch, this 2-disc CD is a must. Apart from all the all-time favourites such as grande valse brillante, op 18, nocturne in E flat major, op 9 no 2, Minute, Black Key, Military, Raindrop, Tristesse etc etc, it's interesting to note Ashkenazy's interpretation of Ballade in G minor, op 23 vis-a-vis Janusz Olejniczak playing it in the poignant scene of the award-winning Polanski's film "The Pianist" ie the piece played by Adrien Brody in his role as Szpilman, the Jewish pianist in hiding, to the German officer Hosenfeld. This the worst CD I've ever had...terrible doesn't begin to describe it. There was nothing even remotely enjoyable..soothing to the ear would NOT be a description that I would give it.

This is a bargain for the price, with GREAT sound quality! Warm, but also clear. The perfomances are great, specially the mazurkas and waltzes and sonatas. I thought the noctures where played a bit to "straight", but it depends what one compares it to. I prefer Cortot for about all the Chopin I've heard of him before 1934 (Although I like Rubinsteins sonata better) and brazilian G. Novaes for the nocturnes.

I am 72 and have had the good fortune to listen to many of the great pianists "in person" at various musical venues over a lifetime. I have also developed an extensive music library over the years. Comparing artists is a waste of time and effort as each has his or her own particular strengths, weaknesses and nose grabbing abilities. I've loved the interpretations of Rubinstein, Horowitz, Lipatti, Perahia, Haskill, Cherkassky, Tanyel, Lupu, Tirino, Hess, de Larrocha, Argerich, etc. etc. This does not classify me as an expert; but only as a lover of great composition and exceptional pianistic artistry. I'm a seeker of the ideal Chopin. This performance is very good but if you have the Chopin recordings of Pollini,Perahia,Zimerman and Rubinstein then you probably don't need this one. But if you do decide to buy it you wont be disappointed.

I thoroughly enjoy these CDs. I tried collecting Mozart in portions over time, but his repertoire is just way too large to manage for amateurs like me. It is well worth buying the whole collection in one purchase.

It's safe to say that Ralph Vaughan Williams is one of the finest British composers alongside Holst, Elgar, Britten, and Bax. His nine symphonies are pure proof of his genius: they're lovely, haunting, lyrical, intense, hot-blooded, ethereal, etc. Maestro Andre Previn leads the London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus with perfect control; no one misses a step. Sound quality is first-rate, and booklet is quite informative. This box set gets an A from me.

This is tripe. Do you love Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Bruckner, Mahler, Debussy, Ravel, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, and Vaughan Williams? Well, you won't love this garbage. It is MUCH better to love the Beatles and Pink Floyd for what they honestly are. They are at least sincere and original art, in their sphere. This is a fraud on every level. It is properly used for backing tracks on bad movies and pop albums. It is music for callow youths who know nothing about aforementioned composers or music, but want to pretend they are "cerebral" and "deep". It is "classical" music for people who want to translate the machinations of the pop world into a score for a real paid orchestra. Mr. Holland's "Opus" rates as high. I remember this from when I was a child and I'm so happy to be able to share it with my own children. They absolutely love this: in the car, at home, to fall asleep to. The music is just as phenomenal as I remember it and my kids love identifying the different instruments!
