This is the first McMurtry album you should buy. It's got most of his classics performed perfectly. McMurtry's family literary humor shines through in "Choctaw Bingo" and "60 Acres", while his songwriting prowess is more clearly defined in "No More Buffalo" and "I'm not from here". Classic songs abound on this album. McMurtry covers Townes Van Zandt's beautiful "Rex's Blues", to close out an album filled to the brim with great live music, clocking in near 80 minutes. You really get your money's worth with this pick-up.

Here's one of the lesser-known but absolutely essential albums of the 1960s, one that captures the innocence & optimism that touched the lives of so many during that sadly brief time. What jaded reviewers dismiss as empty & shallow was something very real & vibrant then -- and we could use more of it today, when times are so grim & bitter, and the human spirit has been crushed in all too many individuals. As the song says, "White bird must fly / Or she will die."
From the quintessential opening track, to the sprawling three-part suite of Side 2 (for those who remember LPs), this is a strong collection of songs imbued with the sense of endless possibilities abroad then. Naive? Yes, to some degree. But as another American ... Read More:

Beirut has quickly joined the ranks of those artists whose music I listen to as I'm writing. It's high praise. What it means is that this album puts me in a frame of mind that unfetters my imagination. While establishing this state, though, the album doesn't insist upon itself; it's not aggressive. Like some songs you grew up hearing in your grandmother's kitchen, this collection creates a kind of nostalgia for things you can't quite remember. I love it.

Joe Strummer & The Mescoleros-Global A Go-Go ***½
Being completely honest I must say that Global A Go-Go is the weakest of the three Mescolero albums. Not quite as solid as the debut, Rock Art & The X-Ray Style and not as rocking as Streetcore, really this is just a mixed bag with a few really great songs, and then the rest are just average songs. This was the second album for the band but this is also somewhat of a different line up, which I don't think meshed totally well, and that is the problem with the album.
If Joe Strummer knows how to do one thing it is have a great opening song. All The Clash albums, all his solo albums, and all of his albums with The Mescoleros feature a killer opening song, and `Johnny Appleseed' ... Read More:

When I was young, this album had an enormous impact on my life. While enduring a love affair gone horribly wrong, somehow these songs gave me comfort, strength, and inspired me to simply endure what felt like the end of the world. Oh, I ate and ate and ate, until I could not eat another plate. Have I had enough my Lord? Far from being the music of suicides, I think this album helped me to avoid the noose. I think it was through Cohen that I discovered the tradition depicted by St John of the Cross in "The Dark Night of the Soul". Loss, pain, and suffering puts one's character into a crucible. Spiritual evolution is a roller coaster. One discovers that the soul has a life of its own, and sometimes must shed it's skin if it is to grow, in it's own serpentine fashion.(When ... Read More:

Look at all the other reviews of this disc. They either say "I love Crosby, Stills, and Nash's music, so I love this" or they say "I love Stephen Stills' music, so I love this." But what would you say if you didn't already know this music from its later, more polished versions? You'd hear a good but occasionally sloppy guitarist singing folky, country-tinged songs, about half of them of very good quality. Some of these songs didn't show up in his later records for a good reason: they're dull. These demo versions of "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" and "Helplessly Hoping" are well worth a listen, but "Wooden Ships" has often been performed better.

Liege and Lief continues to be my all time favourite album of all time!! The album came out in my senior year and since then I've worn out albums, 8 tracks and cassettes!

This album is great. Some Sufjan fans may not like it because it's so overtly Christian, but HEY! he's a Christian! It doesn't make him uncool! I love the songs, they're solid and have great lyrics (what else would you expect from a writing major), and every fan should have this. I particularly love "Transfiguration." By the way, there are Christian themes in all of his albums - it just takes one to know one, I guess.
