Like hearing the old-time bluegrass with a contemporary spin. I think they target younger audiences but older folks may enjoy - just tune out the drug parts.

I can't even tell you how many times I've purchased a movie soundtrack only to be disappointed by the mediocre (at best) collection. Before Garden State, I'm pretty sure the last soundtrack I bought was for Men in Black back in '97. Major disappointment there.
So when I locked onto the Garden State soundtrack, I wavered. I checked out the song clips on Amazon and decided to sit on it for awhile. But I couldn't get the clips out of my head. Do you have any idea how annoying it is to only know 30 seconds of a great song? So I finally gave in. I purchased the CD, and worried that somehow it was going to turn out like one of those movies where they show all the good parts in the preview.

I just love this album. Damien Rice brings storytelling back to the alternative music scene. His warm and sultry voice is reminiscent of Indian singer Tanita Tikarum, only with a slightly more positive bent to the lyrics. The songs have a degree of continuity which makes whole album listening a pleasure. It is filled with unexpected and delightful interjections from female vocalists. The ample use of strings makes O both easy listening and the triumph of a contempory balladeir.

I have been looking for this guy's song Words every since I heard it in The D on a radio station about 2 years ago and now it's available!!!! As a woman, I find his voice to be most captivating and unforgettable! His entire album is deep, eccentric, hot, sexy, and it's the complete package! And he did a remake of one my favorite jams from the 80's, "Level 42's Something About You"! I didn't think anybody else was up on that one. I'm loving this!!! Songs with substance and depth!!! There just isn't much of that to be heard in today's mainstream African American music culture! I am looking forward to hearing more from this gentleman! Bravo on this compilation! Keep doing what you are doing my beautiful brother!!!!

At 14 tracks and just over 44 minutes, this CD is a little short for an S&G compilation. Nevertheless, it could've been a cute little collection, encompassing, as the title suggests, their greatest commercial hits. It falls short of even this aspiration, however, as the familiar studio versions of several songs (including 'For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her,' 'The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)' and 'Homeward Bound') are eschewed in favor of live versions. This would be fine if this information were indicated on the track listing, but it's not, and as such it is misleading and (in the case of 'Homeward Bound', for which I was growing nostalgic and was eager to hear in its original form) disappointing. There are better collections out there ... Read More:

I'm one of Mark Knopfler's biggest fans(and have been since i first heard "Sultans Of Swing" back in '78) and I have to say that I don't think he's ever put out an album better than this one. It amazes me from first song to last. As ever, he writes stories, not just throwaway lyrics to support the melody.A couple of good examples here---The title track wherein he teaches all of us a little about American history(the two men who mapped out the Mason-Dixon Line) and the one describing a mail order bride and her pioneer husband starting a new life together. Start to finish an amazing piece of work worthy of his prodigious songwriting talent.

My first Bob Dylan CD was a Greatest Hits compilation which introduced me to the Bob Dylan of late (Things Have Changed, Summer Days, Feel My Love, etc). After hearing those songs, I knew I had to get Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft and Modern Times. Love and Theft is the only CD I haven't gotten yet.
Modern Times, for the most part, at first seemed a tad slow, if you will. But like a lot of Dylan's material, the more you listen, the more you pick up and begin to appreciate it. I wouldn't put it up there side by side with Time Out of Mind, but it is a close second.
Dylan's voice is definitely in the "gravel" catagory, but that makes this material work in my opinion. Coupled with the great music, the songs would never sound as good ... Read More:
