Compared to Xavier Rudd's larger body of work, "Dark Shades of Blue" languishes in a slump. I first want to establish that I adore Xavier Rudd; I enjoy his live show and I was enthralled by many of his earlier albums like "White Moth" and "Solace." What is the issue? It's hard to say. This pleasant album features all of the typical elements of a good Xavier Rudd release. It features Rudd's killer slide guitar, a good overall sound, the infusion of aboriginal sounds and his environmental consciousness. In this respect, "Dark Shades of Blue" seems a bit redundant. Enjoyed her first album. So I bought this one thinking it would be good as well. But, she's taken a bite out of the Racist/Political pie. Most of the songs take swipes at White Men and Conservative viewpoints. Same thing happened to Iris Dement when she compromised her style for her political viewpoints....She bombed. This is a stinker except for a select few including "All That You Have Is Your Soul".

I bought this CD based on the reviews and it was everything everyone said it was. I have older children that are in college and want the CD because when they listen to it with their brother, it's so relaxing. If you want gentle background music to lull your child to sleep, this is it. If you want to destress with soothing music, this is it. Excellent.

This album gets kind of lost between the masterful comeback Time Out of Mind and the recent, magnificent Modern Times, but it's just as good as those two albums, and it's a masterpiece on its own terms.

It's probably Dylan's most eclectic album musicially. It's all over the place, with hard guitar driven rock (Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Honest with Me), hardcore blues (Lonesome Day Blues, Cry a While), swing (Summer Days), Hoagy Carmicael balladry (Bye and Bye, Moonlight, and Po' Boy), spooky blues (High Water and the closer Sugar Baby), and beautiful, moving ballads (Mississippi, Floater). When i first decided to buy this cd i didn't know exactly what was i doing, but inmediately i listened to it i thought "whoaaaaaaaaaaa". It's different, the voice of the singer is wonderful, the lyrics are spicy and direct and the music is very original. I recommend it to everybody because it's absolutely enjoyable!!!!

Bridge over Troubled Water is just one of those albums that just feels so damn complete. One after another, this album boasts quite some variety, especiallly considering that this album is folk based. Folk based just has that natural, organic sound, and variety in that is just great. Nick Drake knew that, and it seems that Simon And Garfunkel know that as well. Plus, the music on this record is just dang good, period. Not just an acoustic guitar and a guy moaning, there is a variety of sounds in this record, and it can be very melodic. Yeah, it is catchy, but more than catchy. The melodies draw you in to Paul's Simon's pretty cool lyrics (not lyrical rocket science, but they get the job done).

My major problem with this album is that I didn't hear it earlier in my life. I'm always worried that Dylan will ramble on for too long and let his songs wallow in lyrical logic loops that start sounding like spoken word poetry over a predictable background of session musicians doing basically the best they can, but this album is terse, potent, just minimal enough. "Where Teardrops Fall" is just 2:32, the longest cuts about 5 minutes. These songs have varied tempos, an atmosphere, and soul.
