Van Morrison has certainly evolved musically in the 41 years since "Brown Eyed Girl" first hit the charts. The "Simple" premise of Morrison's latest offering is quite ironic. Van Morrison composed and sang all eleven tracks, as well as instrumentally performing the saxophone, harmonica and ukulele. His trademark horn section is noticeably missing from the album, but the extra space is filled with a strong set of backup singers.
As Van Morrison's first album in three years, Keep It Simple was a very pleasant surprise. Morrison has held strong to his authentic American Folk, Blues and Jazz influences even at this stage of his career. His vocal performance is still very strong, as are his lyrics and compositions.

Steve still has it! Not a whole lot of broken ground here, but solid music with great percussion, and classic organ. His voice is still as good as when he was with Spencer Davis doing "Gimme some lovin". Nice surprise.

Let me state upfront that I am a fan, albeit not a huge fan, of John Hiatt. Loved some of his earliest 70s albums, kinda liked his 2001 "The Tiki Bar Is Open", but I really was not prepared for what I'd hear on this album.
"Same Old Man" (11 tracks; 46 min.) was an eye-opener to me, and brought me back to why I loved his earliest albums. The entire flow of the album feels like a man feeling confident in his own skin, growing older, only that this album just oozes confidence from start to finish that I haven't heard in ages from Hiatt. There are no weak tracks on here, not a single one. If I had to point out my personal favorite tracks, they'd be "Old Days", "What Love Can Do", "Cherry Red" and the closer "Let's Give This Love a Try". ... Read More:

Matt offers a truly genuine album with an effort more musicians should put into their album. I dare people to listen to this album and not enjoy it. No, it isn't the banter filled experience of his live show but has a full album replay value much higher than most released today. This wasn't a rushed effort to put a #1 chart topper on the market surrounded by a waste of time. This is a journey that Matt wants you to embark upon that doesn't leave you wondering why you spent $10 for one song. This is a prime example of a true singer-songwriter. The emotion and connection is deep in every song. It isn't a singer performing someone else's hard work. That is why his fan base is more loyal than the secret service. He writes and performs his music, not just for ... Read More:

It's been a long time since I've really let a new artist into my orbit, and I know Amos Lee is not exactly new, but I think he's amazing. He blends some street-funk sensibilities with folk-pop-rock, and I listen to Last Days at the Lodge over and over. The lyrics are intelligent, his voice is warm and inviting, even reminding me of Al Green on songs like "I Wanna Know". I highly recommend this album, and all of Amos Lee's work.
