I missed the 60's and 70's raising children. I heard a voice in the background of a video thru the internet. I asked around and finally found that it was Leonard Cohen. I love his voice. He tells a story thru his songs and they are calming to me. I'm glad I found him. It's never too late. I now have 6 of his CD's.

No wonder Janiva has repeated as Female Blues Artist of the Year! From start to finish this album is absolutely incredible. Janiva pours her heart into every note and it is a moving experience to listen to. I recently saw Janiva with her terrific band at the Rythym Room in Phoenix. She is a great performer - very personable, totally positive, and so comfortable in her own skin. Not only is Janiva a great performer, but she is also a wonderful role model!

When I was young, this album had an enormous impact on my life. While enduring a love affair gone horribly wrong, somehow these songs gave me comfort, strength, and inspired me to simply endure what felt like the end of the world. Oh, I ate and ate and ate, until I could not eat another plate. Have I had enough my Lord? Far from being the music of suicides, I think this album helped me to avoid the noose. In reviewing Bob Dylan's 1965 classic album Bringing All Back Home (you know, the one where he went electric) I noted that it seemed hard to believe now that both as to the performer as well as to what was being attempted that anyone would take umbrage at a performer using an electric guitar to tell a folk story (or any story for that matter). I further pointed out that it is not necessary to go into all the details of what or what did not happen with Pete Seeger at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 to know that one should be glad, glad as hell, that Bob Dylan continued to listen to his own drummer and carry on a career based on electronic music.

Limits Of The Sky

I purchased this album solely because Matthew Sweet is the producer. The production values are amazing; the sound is similar to Matthew Sweet's In Reverse album. The melodies are pure power pop. The musicians are good (bassist is probably the best of them) but don't do anything new. Listen to this on a good sound system and you can't fail to be entertained.

Damien Rice set the bar ridiculously high with his 2004 release, O. On his debut, there was incredible production and amazing sounds coming out of every track. While the follow up to O, also a single character title, 9, is a solid album, fans expecting the artistic saturation found on O will be somewhat disappointed. While Damien Rice's song writing is solid, his voice is great and the lyrics provide good images, we don't get anything like the backwards singing on "Cold Water," or the clinking glasses on the drunken "Cheers, Darling," or the raw emotion so direly expressed in "The Blower's Daughter" or "I Remember" or the Sweedish opera singing on "Eskimo." If you'd like to hear what happens when a (primarily) progressive folk composer, a man used to shooting off five-to-ten minute pieces, tries his hand at a mature work of 40 minutes, give this album a listen.

I've seen the tour supporting the show and I love the album. It's interesting to see how a multi-movement work will translate into a tradition full of short, repetitive tunes, but I really admire the guts here. He really achieves a mood here, and if you're really floundering for something to latch onto, try to focus on how he moves from section to section within the piece.

I preordered this CD. I just listen to it for the second time. This is satire at it's most boring. Don't bother with this CD. Ry has done much more interesting stuff, both lyrically and musically. Listen to the samples before you buy. I wish I did. If you like what you hear ignore this and go with your own tastes but for me "yuck!"

The Swell Season Live From The Artists Den

Personally I enjoy watching a DVD concert vs. listening to the same music on a CD. The visual part is half of the performance. The recording and video quality is very good and captures the experience. There are no 5.1 or DTS surround tracks but I didn't expect them from this venue. I would have liked to see about 3-4 more songs on the song list to lengthen the performance by about 20 minutes or so but maybe the list is shorter to get it all onto a single layer DVD. I recommend this DVD for anyone who likes the Swell Season, Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova or possibly the Frames.
