Extraordinary singers delivering ever popular arias, duets, etc. with beauty of sound. Being live, the performances were delightfully not so absolutely perfect, but real and very impressive. Ony complaint is that too much applause is left in the recording.

Unlike some other reviewers, I think that a lot coming out of Germany after 1950 was self-serving rubbish - young composers trying desperately to break away from their country's long and great operatic traditon, turning to computers, film, and other clever non-musicial artifices. Most of it shallow in retrospect. Here with Aribert Reimann, we have a powerful opera, purely musical, and real theatre, based on Shakespeare's King Lear, a subject originally suggested by the late Fischer-Dieskau who sang the title role at the premiere (in Munich, in 1978). In fact, this recording was made shortly after, with the same original cast, including Helga Dernesch as Goneril, but long unavailable on CD.

As other reviewers have noted, it might not be the best *total* performance of Elijah (although it's still VERY good)....but Terfel gives the best Elijah performance that I've ever heard. If you haven't heard this recording, you are definitely missing out.

Makes you wonder why Charles Murray in his book "Human Accomplishment" does not rate Bach higher. I would not recommend listening to anything that brings tears to your eyes while driving! It could cause an accident.

How can everybody rate this New Year's Concert 5 stars? Okay, this is one of Karajan's last great concerts and he spent a lot of energy during rehearsals. But his conducting is nothing short of routine, as if he was fed up with playing these works over and over again, and he gives the works as much rhythm as plum pudding - Unter Donner und Blitz is so careful that it is more about older people trying to handle a firecracker than about thunder (listen to Reiner!). Kathleen Battle is simply delicious however, thus providing a striking contrast to Karajan's heaviness in Fruhlingsstimmen - like a young nurse visiting a retirement house.
