I got this Cd from a music store two years ago, and I have to say that it was absolutely beautiful. Every song and aria is nice to listen to. I've been listening to this Cd ever since I got it at the store, and it was nice, because it changed my life forever. When I listened to this Cd, I knew I would be surprised, and I was surprised at how great the Cd was. I thought this wasn't Opera singing, but I found that out very clearly. Highly recommended.

This is an extraordinary CD. Mario Lanza is at his best, with some of the most stunning interpretations in opera: the two André Chenier arias, the superb Otello with Licia Albanese and the Butterfly with Elaine Malbin !
This CD brought me back to rediscover Mario Lanza five years ago and to try to know more . It ended up with the Creation of the Opera Club de Paris Mario Lanza, the opening of a website ([...]), trips to Philadelphia to attend every first week end of november the finals of the The Lanza Ball (International Singing contest, some winners Juan Diego Flores, Joyce di Donato etc...). I buy regularly this CD and give it to friends, clients and I tell them: "listen to real singing, listen to a man who sang with his soul. ... Read More:

One of my favorite albums ever. A voice that will take your breath away. The more you listen, the more you will be speechless. Redefines operatic singing and sets a standard above the rest.

Turns out I already had this album when I bought it again from Amazon. Oh well. I find this much Callas too much for one sitting. One CD is too much. However, pick and choose what you are in the mood for. For me, it's Casta Diva from Norma. Every time I take out the CD, it's Casta Diva...and that's enough. Perfection, nobility. I don't want to plow through the repertoire after that.

This is a limited number of arias of the possible repetoir of opera. It is, however, a magnificent collection. It is worth all the time to listen.

I would only add that the orchestral accompaniment on this recording is just astoundingly sensitive, spontaneous and full of life. These are musicians who know how to listen. The responsiveness of the orchestra to the soloist reminds me of some of the greatest jazz improvisations. I've listened to this recording for 30 years and it continues to amaze me.

"The fact that a coarseminded 'reviewer' found Bjorling lacking... is simply another proof of Jussi's quality."
And as for Pavarotti, he idolized Bjorling. "... two interviews with Pavarotti. It is clear that Jussi Björling was his idol. 'When I'm about to train a new opera, I first listen to how Jussi Björling did it. His voice was unique and it's his path that I want to follow. I would more than anything else wish that people compared me with Jussi Björling. It's like so I'm striving to sing.'"
"Anouther quote came from Luciano Pavarotti when he was compared to being in the same league as Bjorling. Pavarotti replied 'Please, I'm only human' a statement demonstrating that even the great modern tenor had enormous respect for Bjorling."

I discovered Gustav Mahler through Leonard Bernstein's CBS recordings of the 1960s. I remember being thrilled the first time I heard the Second Symphony and it remains one of my favorite pieces of music. Too bad this more recent recording does not live up to that experience. Although the sonics are far superior to the earlier CBS recording, Bernstein's pace is very very slow and can be considered self-indulgent. Clocking in at almost 94 minutes, this is probably the longest recording of this work. This ponderous pace is especially apparent in the last two movements. In every other recording I have heard of this work, the finale depicting Judgment Day has some of the most exciting music in the repertoire. However, in this performance Bernstein has made the music almost boring. I ... Read More:
