Otto Klemperer was the third and youngest of Mahler's three "protegees" who promoted his music after his death (the other two were Willem Mengelberg and Bruno Walter). He was also the strcturally cleanest and, like Toscanini, emotionally powerful without resorting to sentiment. (A filmed interview with Klemperer shows him saying that his approach is completely the opposite of Walter's sentimentality.)

That being said, the first movement of this Fourth goes extremely slowly. For the first few minutes, I began to think I had wasted my money on it. This CD reissue of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau doing three of Mahler's suites of 'orchestral songs' is one of the finest side effects of the advent of the CD medium. To get these important works done by such a stellar performer for less than $12 is a wonder. At this price, one can easily have more than one performance of these pieces, even more than one by Fischer-Dieskau. I like Herr Dietrich doing Mahler much more than I like his Schubert or other earlier 'lieder' composers.

As one who has made a real effort to listen to everything Vivaldi, I think I can say with some confidence these Oboe concertos are distinguished. There are many qualities in them not frequently encountered in the far more numerous string concertos. This particular recording is good enough to have warranted my continued, regular listening for many years now. I have heard another performance of one of the concertos which I thought better, but it was due to embellishments Vivaldi probably had nothing to do with.
