This short CD comfortably displays the basics of Mozart in words and music. If your a classical lover interested in these geniuses, and have a literary love also, then you would enjoy these nicely told stories.
I learned here that Mozart picked up his x-girlfriends sister after she cheated on him; Nice! What a stud.
I purchased CD's like this a year ahead of time to use them as time effective sources for English book reports in school because it takes a load off if you're over pressed and over worked. The narrator I found to be enjoyable also. For a couple bucks I really couldn't beat it.

Finally, at last a video of The Flying Dutchman that satisfies! Perhaps this is a difficult opera to stage, and a film is needed. This one is excellent. The violence of stormy seas, the singing of the long-dead sailors in the last act, the hopelessness of Erik's situation, the tentativeness on both sides at the lovers' first encounter--all come through gloriously. It is a thrill to see Donald McIntyre in this. I will watch this video many times.

I loved this film, and enjoyed it very much. Netrebko is a most excellent Elvira, and the rest of the cast completely lived up to her. Recommend this DVD highly for anyone who loves opera on film.

For those who have never listened to the American composer John Adams (not the President!), this is a terrific introduction to his art. It contains his "Harmonielehre," "The Chairman Dances," and two fanfares, "Tromba Lontana" and "Short Ride on a Fast Machine." Sir Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra are in good form with these compositions.
My first introduction to John Adams was while listening to my local NPR station (WITF-FM) 2 or 3 years ago. I was hooked as I listened to the foxtrot for orchestra, "The Chairman Dances." Obviously, this also suggests how isolated I am from contemporary music! Upon hearing this piece, I ordered the CD from Amazon. And I have surely not regretted that purchase.

I'm an early music fan. I also love the work of John Dowland, have lived in Denmark, and visited the castle of King Christian IV where Dowland spent an unhappy time. I resisted having anything to do with this DVD/CD at first, until the PBS presentation that showed Sting at his castle in the U.K. with the amazing lute player. Now I tell all my early-music friends that, yes, the CD is good, but the DVD is better! It's not what we've been used to hearing, but it's an interesting and world-view-expanding experience to see and hear what Sting has done. Now, I'm buying it for all my friends who are Sting fans who would never listen to early music!

if you're looking for music that sounds like a soundtrack for a movie you'll forget in 5 minutes, buy this disc. this music is really bad. at one point a violin line sounds like a vivaldi rip off, and you know what stravinsky said about vivaldi: "vivaldi was a very boring man who wrote the same concerto over and over." in a nutshell, glass's compositions sound like a second year piano student playing appegiated triads over and over and over and over............

I was disappointed by the quality of the recording. Many sections of the orchestra sounded muddy and indistinct, particularly the strings; while the brass sounded harsh.
Release Date May 02, 2006
I was disapointed in the musical interpretation used in this disk. The selections are fine but the arrangements could be much better.

With all the great reviews already written for this performance, you may not need a Common man's point of view. Actually, Ivy Lin's review is the one to read. I think it was she who convinced me to buy this version of the ballet. However, maybe I can add something worth while.
One thing I don't think I saw, was a reference to that other magnificent ballet score by Leo Delibes, "Coppelia". If you do not own a copy of Coppelia, buy it soon. It is quite inexpensive, less than $10.00 from one of Amazon's dealers. I recommend the Australian Ballet version with Lisa Pavane and Greg Horsman. The Australian Ballet - Coppelia Someone said they were husband and wife, if so they have the appearance of a perfect couple.
If for no other reason, one should own ... Read More:
