This is absolutely my favorite CD that we bought for our baby! We've bought quite a few classical-music-for-baby compilations, and this is far and away the best. The music is fun, flirty, stimulating, sweet, and beautifully performed. It's not syrupy, dumbed-down, or played on electronic instruments like some of those other compilations. We listen to it all the time. I now buy this as a baby shower gift for everyone I know!
Forty years passed between the composition of Corigliano's "Sonata for violin and Piano" (1963) and the Red Violin Concerto premiere in 2003. The two works are very different in scope and scale, but to my ears they have a lot in common. I don't guarantee that I could recognize a previously unheard piece of music instantly as Corigliano's, but I'd be willing to try. In his notes for this CD, Corigliano says: the sonata is "for the most part a tonal work, although it incorporates non-tonal and poly-tonal sections within it, as well as other 20th-century harmonic, rhythmic and construction techniques. The listener will recognize the work as the product of an American writer, although this is more the result of an American writing music than writing ... Read More:

I'm not an educated musician or something, I was just looking for the Symphonies and found this amazing collection that includes the full piano concertos, and at a great price!

I find Maurice Ravel's music among the most unique and wonderful of the twentieth century. It marks the sublime marriage of pensive impressionism with--and many music scholars might disagree with me on this matter--a vibrant late-romanticism. There are few collections that highlight this grandness with as much clarity as this album.
The vividness of Ravel's orchestral coloring and the complexity of his polyphony can make the performance of any of his works a sizeable challenge for the finest of orchestras--the slightest miscalculation in dynamic, timing, or articulation can result in entire voices being lost in a mass of sound, but the Montreal Symphony do a flawless job. Also, Maestro Dutoit's interpretations are well-measured, reserved, and insightful, ... Read More:

What else can you say - Bela fleck is a natural phenomenon and has created one of the most bewilderingly impressive feats on a banjo you will ever hear. The album is simply a masterpiece. I watched this live many years ago and was amazed - a life changing performance. Who would have ever thought you could accomplish this with a banjo - Another impressive aspect of Bela Fleck is that he has somehow managed to memorize most of the masterpieces on this album, and to see it live is mind boggling. This is a once in a lifetime performance by one of the most talented musicians to ever live. It's a privilege to have been able to experience it and I highly recommend the album, especially to Bach and Beethoven fans - you will be blown away.

Jochum said this recording was the best thing he'd ever done, but obviously impressions vary. Maybe I had the advantage of limited expectations and a personal crisis the first time I heard it, but it literally made me shudder. The opening sequence, which others here have described as "ponderous," struck me with an almost religious clarity. I found it utterly convincing - a revelation, seemingly, of the true Brahms, which I had hitherto never grasped. I was never a big fan of Brahms before; his music seemed too dense, too murky. But this recording bring out an inner life in the music; a sleeping giant seems to awaken here. I listen to Brahms differently now.
I can name perhaps four or five recordings of similar power, including Furtwangler's version ... Read More:

This collection in some bizarre way became "standard" version of force-fed Beethoven. It is well recorded but I prefer fresher and less pompous interpretations.
I especially liked this Beethoven Symphonies 1,2,3,4,5,6 and Art Galleries of the Time, 2DVDs+3CDs Ultimate MosaicDVD Collection
Beethoven's music is full of emotions but when it is overturned with grotesque oversized, overemphasized emotions the entire performance sound hysterical.

I love this CD and can't wait to use it with my music students when school resumes. Opera is always a difficult subject to create affinity for...this will be extremely helpful!
