From the first time I heard it I knew it was one of the best cd's EVER made, and now some 12 years later, I still feel the same way about it. I put it up there on the same level as Public Enemy's "It Takes A Nation...", Common's "Like Water For Chocolate", Ice Cube's "Death Certificate", Mos Def & Talib Kweli "Are Black Star", Dr. Dre's "The Chronic", And Outkast's "Aquemini". I wish De La Soul would get the credit they truly deserve!!!!!

A bit more of a stereotypical rap album than the group's later work, which is probably why I didn't like it much the first time I heard it. I'm not a fan of stereotypical G-Funk, see, and that's all I heard in it the first time through. God, was I wrong. It's deeper than that, even though it's not fully immersed in the "alternative" thing yet. So even the more "playa-business" oriented tracks - "Ain't No Thang," "Myintrotoletuknow," "Call of Da Wild," "Claimin' True," "Crumblin' Erb," "D.E.E.P." - has OutKast's trademark dark, quirky, layered production. And the classic songs kick as much butt as the best of OutKast's later albums do. The title track is a condensed Isaac Hayes epic with hip-hop beats; breakthrough hit "Player's Ball" has a great rolling beat, charismatic ... Read More:

I got to hear this entire album played today on an online broadcast for a small radio station. Coming in in the middle, like the first listeners to Orson Welles's "War of the World's" broadcast, I must confess that I initially thought the fictional story of "Sister Fatima" -- over-layed like a local DJ's mix of news onto the album tracks -- to be a genuine retrospective of some real events -- that's how accurate the story was to similar aspects of our real-life world, at least in parts. (I caught on when the Governor who backed her execution in the storyline actually cared when he got caught).
What made this album move me was the accuracy in the portrayal of voices. The Sister Fatima's bravery reminded me so much of people I've admired -- friends and icons -- ... Read More:

Anyone who disagrees with my claim (the title of this review) obviosly hasn't heard this. My first introduction to Pete Rock was from the production he lent to other MC's (most notably; solo Wu Tang artist's, Rakim, Biggie, and Nas.) As time went on, I began to hear more, and more of his work. Then I finally heard the song T.R.O.Y off this album, and that was enough for me to order this. I'll never forget the day this showed up in the mail. I expected it to be good, but I wasn't prepared for HOW good. The first time I get an album I always listen to it all the way through, but usually I'll be tempted to skip atleast a few tracks, cause let's face it - very few albums are FLAWLESS. I was more and more amazed throughout this album as to how strong it is. Track for track, ... Read More:

Despite Wyclef Jean still having no problem scoring hit singles, all his albums released after The Carnival have been pretty lackluster. Now he's trying again with Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant.
Scooter McGavin is on point with his review, but I'll say that by looking at the title alone, it appears that Clef himself realizes the quality of said albums, which is why he's possibly reverting back to his old formula. But considering that the original Carnival came out over ten years ago, the problem lies within that formula now sounding dated. But Clef isn't actually going back that far per se: there's no rapping on this album (well, not from him, anyway). The problem is the same problem he usually has: he's trying to mix too many styles at once.

K'naan's "Dusty Foot Philosopher" is on that real tip. Kid grew up in a warzone and caught the last flight to Canada before the airport shut down. Since then he's been rocking the house. Saw him live with Stephen Marley last year and he killed it! Glad the cd is finally available in the states.

Few albums merit the title classic but "Breaking Atoms" does. From start to finish it is simply outstanding. There will probably never be another hip hop album like it. It truly stands in a class by itself. I bought the cassette single for "Looking At The Front Door" back in 1991. You can't even buy tapes anymore. Man, I'm getting old. Anyway shortly after that Main Source released one more album without Large Professor which didn't do too well. Without Extra P, it just wasn't the same. Shortly after that Wild Pitch Records folded and Main Source was hip hop history. Now this classic album has re-surfaced and it's back in print as it should be. I have the japanese version which has 9 bonus tracks. They are:
1. Just A Friendly Game of Baseball (Remix)
2. Fakin The Funk
3. ... Read More:
