Among Porcupine Tree albums, "Stupid Dream" has to be up near the top.
It is a melodic masterpiece, showcasing Steven Wilson's penchant for superior songwriting and production.
"Piano Lessons" and "Pure Narcotic" showcase an almost rock/pop sort of sensibility that gives the album a strange sense of optimism, despite the somewhat pessimistic or dark lyrics that accompany most of the album's songs.
"Stranger by the Minute" is a delightful track with a frolicking lead guitar, offset by strange lyrics about the ghosts of killers and children.
The only thing really missing from this album is the crunch that the band began to use as an accent on their 2002 masterpiece "In Absentia," then brought to the fore on opus "Deadwing." ... Read More:

I was torn between giving this four or five stars, because the last track is extremely boring, which drags it down a half-star. But considering the vast influence it had on post-rock, it really deserves a five.
My favorite songs are "Ascension Day" and "After the Flood". "New Grass", "Taphead", and "Myrrhman" are all very, very well done too. I honestly don't know how they could have made songs as lush, beautiful, complex, experimental, and interesting, and then made the last track, "Runeii", which really is just dull. Maybe it's just me.
Anyways, this is so, so good. It is very different from anything I've heard. It's like Brian Eno was playing in a jazz combo with some guitar feedback and a string section thrown in. Amazing.

I bought during a strange stage in my life where I was trying to figure out where I stood and how I was going to stand there. It has been about six years since I purchased this album initially, and now that I own on it on vinyl thanks to my wonderful girlfriend Katie and her mother's friend Tom, I figured I'd give it a spin. Pun intended.
Some back story on this album: it was the last studio release from John Lennon before his unfortunate passing in 1980. Most of the songs featured were written about his new love for life at age forty, emphasizing his love for Yoko and his now four year old son, Sean, who he and Yoko had given up four years of touring to raise.
A word of warning, though, I did have a strong bias against Yoko Ono. Not because ... Read More:

Punkgasm is a continuation of the direction that they took with World Class Listening Problem, but to me it is a much more experimental CD than anything previously recorded by them. Most of their CDs retained a "character" production-wise. Some might complain they sounded the same on every track (American Don for example I would classify as 'clean' and 'transparent' while '2' is more 'rough' and 'harsh' sounding, neither is a complaint and I do love this band a lot). Punkgasm though has a lot of variation on it, even while sounding very Don Cab-ish. There is also an amazing flow to the CD where short songs like "the irrespective dick area" and "why is the couch always wet?" serve as bridges between the longer songs. You will also notice vocals and even horns on this cd. ... Read More:

What is lame about this offering that AMAZON did not think that this music, or these artists deserve time spent on making mp3 previews of the offered tracks. At least a few of them.
There is so much junk on this site that has a preview of every song, but this double album doesn't have even one track. As crappy as generally previews on AMAZON sound, it would've nice to have a chance to hear what this album sounds like before forking out close to $20 with shipping. I guess it is not "commercial enough." These artists deserve a bit more then AMAZON thinks and this is sad for AMAZON.

Perhaps it was only nostalgia that made me purchase this CD, but I've never forgotten its jazzy melodies. I especially enjoy "Blessed Relief" which takes me back to those musically experimental, latter days of high school (1972-74). I can count this album as one of a handful that formed the basis of my appreciation of jazz.

You should pursue Broken Social Scene's entire catalog, especially YFIP, but this is an incredible follow-up. The reviews here sum it up pretty well, but for anyone on the fence, just spend 89 cents on 7/4 Shoreline (or find the video). As another reviewer said, it's essentially a perfect pop song.

I can talk about this song or that, or how Calexico has a distinctive and beautiful sound, and all that. Here's how I know this album is good. After I got it, I played it for an entire week to the exclusion of pretty much everything else.
It gets under your skin it's so good. It changes pace and style from song to song, so you don't get bored, and songs don't all convolve together into just one indistinguishable pile of music. It'll keep in your mind even after you turn it off, and you'll look forward to getting back home so you can listen to it again.
And then, you should go to el Guero Canelo and get the best Sonoroan hotdog ever.
