If you like any kind of 70's airy guitar psychadelia even just a little bit this album is perfect for you. I'll catch flack for this but my friends have been trying to get me into radiohead, and I prefer these guys for the simple reason is the vocals aren't horribly annoying. It just sounds less pretentious. Sorry for the diatribe just buy this you won't regret it. I've recommended this to 7 people and they all love it.

When one thinks of places that would foster bands who specialize in seven-minute-plus suites of guitars, bass, and drums and no singing, probably one of the last locales that would come to mind is Texas. The world of instrumental music is not a very popular one and is dominated by only a few bands that can claim any amount of fame, the most well-known being Icelandic musical deconstructionists Sigur Ros.
However, Midland, Texas band Explosions in the Sky have been making a name for themselves in the post-rock world after rising from the Austin music scene with their widely-acclaimed sophomore album Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever.
Building their reputation on a powerful live show ... Read More:

I have to say that this is better than I thought it would be. The EPs they released had some good moments, but didn't blow me away. This is a pretty interesting record. The rhythm section is a little stiff sounding which can sometimes lack an in-the-pocket type feel. Which could explain many reviewers saying that it is too mechanical sounding, but I think the creativity mostly makes up for this. The best thing I can think of to describe the odd sound of Battles is Afro-pop on nitrous oxide. Which actually sums it up quite perfectly. I don't really consider it Math Rock, since the time signatures are pretty straight forward for the most part.

I am 40 and have been listening to instrumental guitar stuff for half my life, maybe more. I am all over the place with my tastes. This album did not take me very long to start to enjoy. I was first introduced to it via Whitewash, which is infectious enough, but the rest of the CD is even moreso. Yes, there are a couple of times when you think, "maybe he should have shortened this by a minute", but overall, the disc shows an artist who is very in touch with both over the top soaring leads, and soft touch stuff that makes you think it was played with a child's hands (that's a compliment). Buckethead, however strange the image, is a very adept player who can do this type of thing as good as any of the rest of them out there. It's unfair to compare him to Vai, Satch, et ... Read More:

I'm a fan of everything Calexico does. At times innovative. At times psychadelia meets sergio leonne. At times just mariachis strumming while you drink a shot of Mezcal at XXX Kentucky Bar in Nogales.

Lovely music. Nice Indian flavor yet contemporary. Dreamy. Great addition to have Sting accompany on the one track. Ravi gets it going fast on his tracks. Love Karsh Kale on this.

For the uninitiated, Mogwai is one of the most popular (and most talented) "post-rock" bands in the world. They have been rocking and rolling for almost ten years and their albums stand as monuments to post-rock music. What is post-rock you ask? I don't know exactly...but I know I enjoy most music labeled as "post-rock."
"The Hawk is Howling" is another fine addition to the Mogwai catalog. Like every Mogwai release, the music captures many different emotions and sentiments.
The track sequencing is superb. (Listen to every track from the beginning to the end.) The album features both soft, meandering guitar pieces and loud, furious guitar pieces. The soft tracks and the loud tracks work together to create a unique experience.

An album of this standing, if ever, rarely comes along. Animal Collective's Noah Lennox furthers his alter role as Panda Bear and boy are we ever glad he did. Call it experimental, far-outlandish or even psychedelic if you will. The sheer truth is that "Person Pitch" is genius. Intoxicating and optimistic, it's almost spiritual! Maybe Portugal had some something to do with (Noah now resides in Libson, Portugal with his wife and daughter) who knows? What we do know is that the album is full of subtle surprises that reveal themselves with every listen; typical of Animal Collective, I know. But "Person Pitch" is truly in a class of it's own. Simply put, this is one of the most beautiful, personal, special, good-spirited, healthy, invigorating, enchanting, exhilarating, carefully crafted ... Read More:

This 1975 album is my favorite of Eno's "rock" records and the contemplative, moody soundscapes really made it work for me. Overall, Another Green World presents a nice mixture of Eno's quirky pop tunes, gloomy instrumental tracks and a few instrumental pieces that feature some great playing by Phil Collins (Genesis, Brand X) and Percy Jones (Brand X).
Along with Brian Eno (guitars, synthesizers, electronic effects, keyboards, percussion and vocals), the personnel listing on this excellent 1975 release includes a few prog luminaries such as Phil Collins (drums and percussion), Percy Jones (fretless electric bass) - they play on two vaguely jazz-rock flavored pieces including Sky Saw and Over Fire Island and a mood piece entitled Zawinul/Lava, while Robert Fripp (King Crimson) ... I own about 5 Eno albums and about 4 Harold Budd albums and several other ambient albums by other artists. This album "Ambient 2" is one of my favorites, not only as an Eno album, not only as an Ambient album, but it is one of my favorites music albums overall. I am a huge fan of ambient, and I have wasted a fair amount of money searching for good albums to listen to, so it is always so refreshing and satisfying to stumble upon an ambient album that is really good. It is hard to shop for ambient albums, because there is such a fine line between good ambient, and ambient that sounds like cheesy new-age music, or just not very good sounding ambient.
I own "Ambient 1" by Eno, but I only like 2 out of the 4 songs on it. On this album "Ambient 2" I like about 95% of ... Read More:
