I must have told a thousand people how wonderful Athlete's first album was. It was quirky, unique, melodic, I could not have been more effusive than I was, when talking about it. I gritted my teth when "Tourist" came out, and tried ever so hard to like it, but the depth of "Vehicles and Animals" was definitely not present on this second cd. Then "Beyond the Neighbourhood" was issued. What a huge disappointment. Athlete had held so much promise, and now, they seem as if they are just another band putting out sappy radio songs. I do not mean to denigrate those who gave this recording a positive review, but please listen to "Vehicles and Animals." It is truly one of the greatest pieces of popular British music to be released in twenty years. ... Read More:

I have every major sonic youth release, and I gotta disagree with the few negative reviews on this cd. Every SY album is different then the next really, but this one shines brighter with individuality. You can tell they had a lot of fun with this album, and went in a very different direction. I love the album though. It's not their best, but anyone who likes sonic youth should own it. I'll admit it's hit or miss; some songs are pretty bad (and I love almost all SY stuff), but others are brilliant. If all other SY releases are on Earth, this cd is out in space. It combines the mellow ambience of NYC Ghosts & Flowers with Dirty's hard hitting riffs and distortion. When I'm in the mood for Experimental Jet Set, nothing can come close

I barely became aware of the release of this album in early 2008 (it came out in mid-2007). Yet, since I found out about it, it's become a fixture in my iTunes playlist. The ethereal sound of Harold Budd (one of the early creators of Ambient music along with Brian Eno) blends in impeccably with the guitar work of Robin Guthrie (of Cocteau Twins fame) to yield an album that you will indulge in time and again.
Along with the companion Before The Day Breaks, this is an album you will find yourself listening in times of trouble and in times of joy equally, non-intrusive music that you can work to and write to as much as you can mellow to.

I had been at a musical festival when I first heard these guys but we all know that doesn't necessarily translate into enjoying their studio albums.....I did and still do. I NEVER would have thought I would enjoy music that did not have a guitar but there you are! "Third" is innovative, melodic, intricate, and intriguing.

rarley do you find music that you can went insane on the dance floor or contemplate on your bus ride to home/work or just stare at the wall wondering how this talented artists made such great and groundbraking music that layed the foundation of music to come. I only came in contact with their music recently and what i heard is familiar sounds from bands whose music i love, like ESG, Gang of Four, PiL, and bands that came years after them but were probably influenced by them like !!!, LCD and many more...

I was turned onto Trentemøller through my interest in house music, having it described to me as a cutting edge electro-house cd. Really, "The Last Resort" is a far more minimal, downtempo electronic affair, with greater emphasis on ambience and atmospherics rather than thumping house beats. Most of the songs showcase a sophisticated writing approach that goes beyond basic build-up play. Instead, the songs have an overt progressive structuring to them, shown especially with the sublime opener "Take Me Into Your Skin". The song starts with lifting ambient sounds, with textures gradually building to what I imagined to be a huge beat drop, but instead the ground gives way to a surprising anti-drop, a minimal beat driven by a heavy base, sounding as if you've just ... ME was the lab's definitive reply to rising questions of eventual relevance, and that answer sounded still like a resounding yes. Quite a few trademark effortlessly focused compositions borrow from their past while laying groundwork for a future sound without doing anything to potentially offend either camp. It seems to start more convincingly then finish, but the whole thing stays true to their consistent and unique approach.

My first experience with Trentemoller came from the outstanding 2006 essential mix (october 15) which completely blew me away with his mellow, ambient electronic tones. since then, my appreciation of other artists in this genre has been shaped by the standard that trentemoller set. it's of course little doubt that i ran out and purchased his album (the last resort, amazon link: The Last Resort) and loved every second of it.
this album continues the greatness established by the first. as you can tell from the product description, this is filled with alot of his preselected picks, so a lot of general pieces will come back again (especially from the first album), but for the most part they are all freshly remixed and inventively presented. even now legendary ...
