I first heard this cd at a daycare I worked at, they played it during nap time while the children slept. I thought it was the most peaceful music I had heard. I never knew what the name was and was always looking at the stores for ocean waves or sounds, anything that might be what I was looking for. I finally stumbled upon it on accident and was soo excited! I listen to it when I am having a difficult time sleeping or if I need to "unwind" after a hectic day. I even made a copy of it for my grandma who is 80 years old, and she enjoys it as well! It is the perfect music for a good rest for any age! I think the music in the background is very subtle and not too overbearing, and adds to the serenity of the waves crashing. I would recommend ... Read More:

Another one of my favorite C.D.'s for massage. I massage in a ritzty hotel in New Port and when ever I choose this C.D. everyone usually drifts off to sleep. Combined with the lulling sounds of the waves and music that never goes up tempo its no wonder my clients start to snooze. As the therapist it never gets boring though either, you just fall into its spell and your hands dance to the lovely tunes. Its beautiful on alot of levels.

I was given this album on vinyl many, many years ago, and listened to it over and over growing up. There is only whale song, no human additives (except for a motorboat in one part, if I remember correctly). I still have it on vinyl, but am looking forward to the new, digitally remastered CD version.

20 years ago I heard an interview with Mickey Hart on NPR. He had wanted to compose a piece of music for his pregnant wife and their unborn child. He based it on her heartbeat. They played it through the pregnancy and again during the birth and afterwards. From then on when their son would go ballistic, or cranky or teething or not want to go to sleep, they would put on the music. Within miniutes their son chilled and became a human once again. Their son was about 4 when tthe interview happened and the interviewer asked the son what his favoite music was. "Music to be born by" came spontaneously. And his second favorite? The Grateful Dead. I sought out the recording (it was only a casette at that time and only through the graces of WGBH) and ... Read More:

This is a CD of classical music with THE SOUNDS OF A LOON randomly mixed in with the music. There's nothing relaxing about it. Unless you consider laughter the best medicine. Because this CD is hilarious. And that's why I give it 5 stars. The sheer absurdity of Classical Loon makes it worthy of purchase. And it turns out that somewhere out there is a "Classical Loon II", as well as a "Jazz Loon". The mind boggles.
There's some sign that the makers of the CD knew how absurd the premise was, too. It starts with Debussy's "Clair De Lune". Haha. The next track is "Season of Love", and the loons make some very, ummm... interesting noises.
