One of the most fascinating and unique sounding of the recently-rereleased early Nonesuch Explorer albums. Ghanian highlife pioneer Saka Acquaye hosted this loose-edged, jazz-tinged jam session, which blends standard old-school highlife music (and its calypsonian roots) with playful, exploratory free jazz. American saxophonist Charles Earland is a key participant in these freewheeling. improvisational sessions, adding an authoritative jazz feel to the delicate clamour of a keening vocal chorus and erratic, seemingly chaotic percussive patterns. I first became aware of John's music when I worked at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and have been a huge fan ever since.

I love the quiet beauty of this album. It reminds me of walking in a pueblo as the sky grew dark, and sand blew fiercely against my face before I took cover. All around me was quiet and there was magic in the air.

I first heard this cd at a daycare I worked at, they played it during nap time while the children slept. I thought it was the most peaceful music I had heard. I never knew what the name was and was always looking at the stores for ocean waves or sounds, anything that might be what I was looking for. I finally stumbled upon it on accident and was soo excited! I listen to it when I am having a difficult time sleeping or if I need to "unwind" after a hectic day. I even made a copy of it for my grandma who is 80 years old, and she enjoys it as well! It is the perfect music for a good rest for any age! I think the music in the background is very subtle and not too overbearing, and adds to the serenity of the waves crashing. I would recommend this to anyone ... Read More:

Another one of my favorite C.D.'s for massage. I massage in a ritzty hotel in New Port and when ever I choose this C.D. everyone usually drifts off to sleep. Combined with the lulling sounds of the waves and music that never goes up tempo its no wonder my clients start to snooze. As the therapist it never gets boring though either, you just fall into its spell and your hands dance to the lovely tunes. Its beautiful on alot of levels.

Keepers of the Dream

I love this album - it's like happy family and hospitality to guests both. To the reviewer who can't appreciate the task of recording a peoples'history, there isn't a written history amoung these magical and mystical storytellers. I wish i could say (i'm white, european ancestry)- read the history books. But these American history books don't have integrity, they aren't accurate, and they are not complete. Mr. Locke is my favorite flutist, i almost always immediately recognize his flute.
