What else can be said? Read the other reviewers comments, as they sound very seasoned on whats good. I, for one, have been into the blues for a few years and bought this CD.
Awesome stuff!! Makes me want to smoke a fat cigar and sit on my back patio with shades on at night time. Er, well.....a really good compilation.
Buy it and you won't be disappointed.

I will admit I'm a new Taj Mahal Fan. I met him at a private party several years ago and saw him again at the same annual party last fall.
I enjoy his music and this 2 CD set is good driving tunes.

The first track stuck with me and I have never forgotten the words: "Nobody loves me but my mother , and she could be jivin' too."This album is not typical of BB King but I believe it os one that new listeners should try as it really does give you a feel ofthe blues but with a different tilt . It has been a favourite of mine for almost 30 years and I still want to play it over and over again and now can on CD .

Black Magic seemed to be another stepping stone to an extremely promising blues career. The young man, having had the stereotypical hard upbringing that seems to be a blues artist's rite of passage, was on his way to stardom based on very successful appearances at several blues festivals.
But Black Magic, instead of being part of his beginning, ended up being his epitaph. Sam Maghett died of a heart attack in December, 1969 at the age of 32, leaving much promise unfulfilled and lots of thoughts of what could have been.
This record was a very good followup to his phenomenal first record, West Side Soul. His playing and vocals were very good on this record, and while overall it is not up to the extraordinarily high accomplishment ... Read More:

my review is number 23, and so far there has been nothing except 5 star reviews. that's because 5 is the highest score that can be given. virtuoso is a title that is tough to live up to, but i think the title of vituoso came searching for ronnie to give itself to him. san-ho-zay opens it up, and my lord, it will make you listen in disbelief. as much as you think there might be, there is only one guitarist on this cd, and he is blues royalty, the earl of blues. have a friend or two rate it with you so you can give it more than two thumbs up.

This is a great John Lee Hooker and probably one of the best blues albums period. The sound quality on this album is top notch (this is not true with all John Lee Hooker material or blues in general). This also includes some of Hooker's best songs, including "It Serves You Right to Suffer" and "Sugar Mama".
The real deal of this album is that Hooker is trying to mainstream himself here. This is not from the classic Hooker period (but it is a classic album). This album came out in the 60's after the start of the British Invasion and this is Hooker's attempt to make a mainstream album for those who were into British Invasion groups. This becomes evident during Hooker's version of "Money". Typically the blues artists that tried to make a mainstream/ ... Read More:

I heard this set before I was exposed to the legendary 1959-1968 Stax/Volt volume one box set. With the exception of Otis Redding, I am more impressed with music here than in volume one. The loss of Otis Redding and the fallout of the distribution deal with Atlantic clearly sent the label into a tail spin. However this forced (or allowed) other talents to rise up, like Isaac Hayes, and the label sought acts like the Staple Singers, who found their sound in Memphis. This is also when the black power/black consciousness movement starts to influence the music. There's more message music -- some of the best and funkiest message music recorded -- and apart from a few tracks, you're not really beat over the head with it. (One exception may be John KeSandra's "(What's Under) The ... Read More:

I first heard this album when I was nineteen years old and looking for to hear something that would inspire me as a musician and human being. It's a shame that in this age of MP3 downloads you miss out on the album cover art and exquisite liner notes ... "songs of Mother Euphrates..." and this description "this album is the product of a number of musical friends, some of whom do not use music to create their song". This album is life-affirming, community building universal language at its best. And on top of that, very hip, very cool, and very funky. Anyone who thinks they dig modern blues, Americana, musicology or rhythm and blues in general should have a copy of this classic.
