I am learning to play the clarinet, specifically jazz clarinet. It's been recommended that I listen to as many players as I can and to try to pick a style that I feel I want to mimic for a bit until I develop my own. This disc is great because it introduces me to 25 different players.

I love this disc. It hasn't left my disc player since I got it.

Remember, it's mono because they didn't have stereo recordings in 1918-1943...at least not that I know of.

for anyone who loves traditional jazz, louis armstrong, jack teagarden or big sid catlett, this is a must have! five stars.

recorded in 1947, the sound is superb and makes you wish you were there. armstrong and teagarden were inspired playing with each other. barney bigard plays very well also. excellent liner notes.

this was originally a two 78rpm box that came out in the early 50s. the only minus is that two songs from the original were left off the cd due to time/space. turn the sound up to 11.

A Rare Batch Of Live Satch

This is indeed a rare Satchmo collection, with some classical and some really odd recordings, with Fletcher Henderson, Luis Russell, Clarence Williams and a host of other (often almost forgotten, sometimes quite forgettable) musicians... Just check out the list of links I attached to this product.

As opposed to the suggestion of the cover art, this is a CD of a young (but already brilliant) Armstrong, and the information in the "booklet" is ridiculously inappropriate for such a serious and precious collection. I guess these tracks are in a public domain now, but if you don't have a better overview of these aspects of Satchmo's carreer (and if the price is reasonable) you should still get it.

'I cover the waterfront' is for sure one of the best performances in the history of jazz. Even a high level Coleman Hawkins is overshadowed here by Allen. Really impressive trumpet playing. There's everything. Command, attitude, ideas, variety, impecable phrasing, good taste... Don't miss this one for nothing!

This is a valuable release of rare solo material from late in Joe Sullivan's career. The fist seven tracks are live airshots from Club Hangover in San Francisco recorded between 1953 - 55, and find Sullivan in fine form. On occasion there is uncredited support by bass and drums, largely unnecessary for a player with Sullivan's powerful left hand.

The remainder of the material, the last recordings that Sullivan made, were recorded by the jazz critic Richard Hadlock in 1963, by which time Sullivan was ill and largely forgotten. Three tracks come from a private session, whilst the remainder were recorded from live perfomances at the Trident Club, again in San Francisco.
