This is a good live record of Armstrong with his best All Star - Line Up, Edmond Hall - Clarinet, Trummy Young - Trombone, Billy Kyle - Piano, Barrett Deems - Drums and Squire Gersh - Bass, Velma Middleton - Vocals.
Although I personally prefer Jazz with as little vocals as possible this is still a good record with the band playing well notable the great solo by Ed Hall on Sweet Georgia Brown with out any doubt the craziest solo ever played on that song.
The only "draw back" for me personally is the song choice :
I love Jazz, High Society, Ole Miss Blues, Blue Moon, Sweet Georgia Brown, Blues, Mack The Knife, Tenderly, Baby it's Cold Outside, C'est si bon.
I am missing the REAL Stuff like Mahogany Hall Stomp, Tiger Rag ... Read More:

I have a weakness for traditional Middle Eastern music, spurred by a year spent in Afghanistan. I discovered this CD quite by accident while searching for Arabic pop music this past summer. I was attracted to the bits I heard on the Amazon music player and ordered the CD. The first time I listened to it I was not entirely impressed, so I listened to it again and discovered much of the complexity that I had missed with my first preview.
Too often, jazz is overly complex in both range and the number of instruments. For me, the attraction to this particular music genre is the complexity a good artist can create with only one or two instruments, and this is a complexity that Anouar Brahem brilliantly brings to his recording. I will not ... Read More:

One of the best things about this set is that it gives you 2 songs that never before have been available on album or CD ,they were just released on 45 RPM records only and these are:

If you like small group vintage-sounding jazz, you will probably appreciate this CD. The 7-member band (plus soloist Carol Leigh who does a great job at singing "hot" jazz) includes Lew Green, an excellent cornet player (my favorite instrument), but all the musicians are super.
Songs include selections about Indiana or songs somehow associated with Indiana (i.e., written by Hoosier native Hoagy Carmichael). Songs include, "Indiana, Hoosier Hop, Blue Hoosier Blues, Hoosier Sweetheart, Star Dust, Can't Get Indiana Off My Mind, and Banks of the Wabash (plus 6 others). When the men who make the group sing, well, they're nothing to brag about vocally. But all in all, a fine CD.

Ken Davern is one of the purest clarinet players I've heard since Benny Goodman. He is great! Also, it sounds like Howard Alden on the 7 string guitar on the preview. If it is, you are in for a real treat with this C.D. They were at the Jazz Festival in Elkhart, Indiana the last weekend of June. They were simply marvelous. If you like this type of jazz, you will love them.

Jazz has about 1,000 compilations per square foot, so it's understandable how this one has gone relatively unheralded. Yet it's one of the finest collections I've seen in years -- it has personality and coherence, and Giddins' choices are never faulty. Most of the major figures are represented, sometimes by obvious choices ("a night in tunisia" for parker/gillespie), sometimes by esoteric ones (billie holiday's "detour ahead", a previously unreleased Basie tune that just smokes). Underrated musicians -- Randy Weston, Don Pullen, Kay Starr -- take their places among the canonized, while avant-garde masters like Coleman and Taylor are given a good deal of room.
It's ultimately a tribute to Giddins' wonderful, catholic tastes. If only ... Read More:

I was introduced to Paul Shapiro's music courtesy of a New York City area radio show and I immediately ordered Midnight Minyan. I have played the heck out of that CD. When I found out about It's in the Twilight, I pre-ordered the disc and again have been playing the heck out of it. I will have the chance to see the music performed live on March 4th and can't wait. A devout Jazz fan, I have also been listening to a lot of Jewish Music and to have the two forms so beautifully merged is too much to ask. No favorite tunes on Twilight. They all sparkle....they're well recorded and all musicians get a chance to shine. Rush to buy this CD.

My brother introduced this album to me in the mid-sixties. I've been looking for it for some time now with no luck, and finally found it. It was apparently recorded with little intervention - complete with flaws and of-the-moment emotion.
