The Dukes of Dixieland have been playing that great Dixieland Jazz sound since 1946, when the Assunto brothers began playing in Mama Lou's Seafood restaurant in New Orleans. This album is the band's tribute to the great Jelly Roll Morton, the father of Dixieland. The album has 10 tracks: Alexander's Ragtime Band, Riverboat Shuffle, Whinin' Boy Blues, Maple Leaf Rag, Sheik Of Araby, Buddy Bolden's Blues, Just A Closer Walk With Tee, Kansas City Stomps, New Orleans Joy, and The Saints.
This is a great album, with that great Dixieland sound - spiritual, blues, Rag, all of it. The songs were recorded at live performances, which gives them a real authenticity, like you are hearing them down there in New Orleans for yourself. I love this ... Read More:

A showcase for Fountain's clarinet, this album should appeal more to fans of Pete than of New Orleans' music. Pete's claim that his primary influence was BG, especially the Goodman of the trios and quartets, is fully demonstated on this session. The accompaniment is swinging, crisp, and rather lean, thanks in some measure to the absence of a piano, but none of the supporting musicians measures up to the capabilities of the leader during the solos. Wonder if Pete planned it that way.

My brother introduced this album to me in the mid-sixties. I've been looking for it for some time now with no luck, and finally found it. It was apparently recorded with little intervention - complete with flaws and of-the-moment emotion.

Maybe you don't need this concept album in your collection. The problem with LOUIS is that his discography is so full of treasures, that one is almost forced to settle for those budget priced packages that often mix everything.By buying those, you are bound to reduce a musical genius to bits.Let me try to sell this one for you by saying that the concept of angels is very tastefully done, even if the songs are not all great. The choir adds to the fun,and during THE PRISONER'S SONG,LOUIS actually ask someone why this particular song got there.Remember this, there was only one SATCHMO and there are still out there tons of imitators. If LOUIS had actually married an angel, think of what the world had missed.

This is album l of a combined album featuring the Dukes at DisneyWorld and the second album is a recorded session about a year earlier. I recommend getting both albums together "The Dukes Marching through DisneyWorld and...(?)"

These must have been pressings that never made it to market. Even the
classic "Big Noise From Winnetka" was a shortened and not close to the
quality of the one with which I am familiar.

Great sides, but as usuaual, record companies have no idea how to remaster shellac pressings. They make them sound muddy and life-less. They think surface noise will offend our ears more than the original music. They are supposed to sound bright, punchy with solid bass. I had a hell of a time pulling these out of the hole using Sound Forge.
