That's all I can say - It makes you smile. It's so juxtaposed - the convergence so incongruent that it works. What comes out is humor. Great fun. He does "BAD"TUBA

For fans of truly unique swing and jazz type music, this is a rare find. Finding jazz type music with a strong steel guitar player is really a rare find. While all of the musicians on this cd are excellent, Curly Chalker and Jethro Burns really stand out. Know of anything else like this that doesn`t feature Buddy Emmons? E-mail me.

I don't get the other reviewers who insist on Peps being a Goodman clone. Well was Bob Wilber one too? Did he sound like Peps? How about Johnny Mintz? I contend that this great album features a clarinetist doing his own thing and that the differences and contrasts between his playing and Goodman's are easily as important as the similarities. I hear Peps, not Goodman.

Art Hodes is one great artist who would've benefitted from being less modest;this is beautiful stuff-maybe to the point that he doesn't realize he's acting as his own warm-up act by kickin' things off with an incredibly georgeous version of 'Winin' Boy Blues' with Truck Parham on bass-and sticks with the duet through 'Old Fashioned Love','Blues Yesterday' and 'Ballin' the Jack'.Then he shifts to a quartet for 'Struttin' With Some Barbeque'(which he's played on several other cd's)-and sticks with a quartet or quintet through the remainder of the cd.The group stuff is terrific-Nappy Trottier(tr),George Brunis(tb),Volly Devault and Raymond Burke(cl),Pops Foster(b)and Barrett Deems(d)-but that should've been for another day, another great album. This one should've ... If all you got on this album was "Coast Concert", with the great remastering job done on this version, you would have a bargain. Featuring two of the greatest trombonists ever in Jack Teagarden and Abe Lincoln; add the precise, brilliant trumpet of Bobby Hackett;throw in the always-lively clarinet of Matty Matlock; and you have the makings for a GREAT jazz jam session. In addition, ONLY THIS VERSION has a bonus track, St. James Infirmary (a rare version featuring a wonderful Teagarden vocal). If all that isn't enough, 1957's "Jazz Ultimate" follows up featuring Jack T., Bobby H., and the great Peanuts Hucko on the licorice stick. Finally, you get 2 different takes of "Indiana" and "55th and Broadway". In my humble opinion, Teagarden was at his very best from ... Read More:

The CD features a great selection of "jump blues" songs from the late '40s to the mid '50s. Jump blues can be considered to be sort of a combination of swing music and the blues. Or you could just call it early r&b with horns. However you want to look at it, it was definitely a precursor to rock and roll. Many of the songs here would go on to be recorded by rock and rollers. (Elvis covered four of the songs here.) But putting the rock and roll connection aside, this music can stand on it's own merits. This is just plain fun, wild music. But don't take my word for it, listen to it and decide for yourself. Highly recommended.

If your love traditional jazz, this is a must for your collection. Matty Matlock is a great musician and arranger and many of the bands on the current jazz circuit use his arrangements. This is a fabuluos CD!
