CD-Charts Music : Mis'ry and the Blues

Mis'ry and the Blues

CD-Charts > Music > Dixieland
by: Jack Teagarden

Release Date September 09, 2003
I purchased this album in the sixties, and fell in love with its slow pace full of longings, regrets, admonishments, and just plain living. It was and has remained one of my favorite jazz albums of all time. The delivery of the lyrics makes one live the story while being moved by the music. This kind of musical intimacy has been created by few performers. It just does not get any better with this music essential to any collection of traditional jazz.

Release Date July 20, 1999
If you are a Teagarden fan this and Coast Concert is an absolute must own. Jack is in at his gut-wrenching best with support of truly All Star gathering. I have a rather extensive collection of Teagarden and this CD would be competing for THE top of my list.
SIMPLY NO DISCUSSION NEEDED, GET THE CD OR BE VERY SORRY WHEN IT'S NO LONGER AVAILABLE !!

The Firehouse Five Plus Two Story

CD-Charts > Music > Dixieland
by: Firehouse Five Plus Two

Release Date February 03, 1994
I am no musical scholar but i have always been fascinated by the Prosperous, wild, and immoral times of the roaring 20's. When you listen to this music you can picture those times with cop cars chasing after gangsters in a high speed chase with Tommy Guns Blazing. You can picture happy people doing the Charleston and flappers doing their naughty dances. You can picture guys like Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey in a speak easy pounding down beer after beer and giving every cutie on the dance floor a spin. This music captures the upbeat happy times of the ragtime, dixeland wild era of our countries history. If you liked the music in the film The Sting......if you like Rag and Dixie.......then this is that music on Steroids. Most reviews classify ... Read More:

The Wildest!

by: Louis Prima

Release Date May 16, 2000
Out of the 200 CDs I own, this is in the top three. In the week after I bought it, I've bought three more Prima cds. They're not as good as this, but I'll keep buying his cds in the hope that they might contain one track as good as any on The Wildest.

Hello, Dolly!

CD-Charts > Music > Dixieland
by: Louis Armstrong

Release Date November 07, 2000
Released in 1964, this hep cat album from a 60+-year-old American legend featured the title song that pushed the Beatles off their #1 perch on the charts at the peak of their popularity. A must-have album in which Satchmo shows the world he's still got it by blaring that famous trumpet to then-current Broadway tunes, old standards and pop hits. Listen for his inside joke "broken record" that only us "old" people can grin at in this digital age. I dare anyone to groove to "Jeepers Creepers" and not find themselves snapping their fingers!
PS: An earlier review mentions missing/out-of-sequence songs. I did not find this to be the case on my "black and white" (and red)CD, but perhaps that is the case on the CD with the "color" album cover.

The Louis Armstrong Collection, Vol. 4: Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines

CD-Charts > Music > Dixieland
by: Louis Armstrong

Release Date August 07, 1989
If some curious alien woman from visited earth and asked "what is jazz?" I would have 2 answers. The first was Louis' direct response to that question: "Lady, if you've got to ask, you ain't never gonna know." The second would be to play this.

These sessions from 80 years ago have been on so many favorites lists that I'm afraid people shy away from this music, just because someone told them they are supposed to like it. If you think anything from 1928 is inherently "moldy fig", if you feel this music has been institutionalized to death, think that Armstrong was an Uncle Tom, think that "Dixieland jazz" is music for shallow old fart tourists, or, especially, if you've never heard these tracks, clear your mind, try to take the perspective of a ... by: Jack Teagarden

Release Date February 22, 2005
these sets are the best bargain in jazz rereleases, both for the price and the quality (including complete liner notes). The Teagarden set ranks at the top, mostly of course because it is Teagarden. The anthologies are perhaps even better -- Hitting on All Six and The Engine Room -- see my reviews. But Teagarden is a giant of a musician, as a singer but even more as arguably the greatest trombone player in jazz. I realized that his voice and his trombone have the same tone -- which is cool.

by: Jim Cullum Jazz Band

Release Date December 15, 1998
This album is SO WONDERFUL that I can't find words great enough!
It is soulful, brilliant, jazzy, -- timeless.
I have many albums, and several by Jim Cullum's band, but this is
my favorite.
EVAN CHRISTOPHER is THE best clarinetist I have ever heard!
Such a variety of tone, from sweet to raucous, slow and mournful to
quick, free, and gleeful.
The Ave Maria is my favorite of ALL arrangements I have ever heard of
that piece.
Arrangements on all of the album are done by a real genius, as well
as by a group of very skilled professionals, able to produce the "once in a lifetime" performance, typical of true Dixieland music.
