These are a steal, practically mandatory pick-ups for giving to family and friends. The artists and tune selections aren't "throwaways" but represent some of the best recorded moments in jazz over the past 5-6 decades. The personnel listings and recording dates are even complete and accurate.
The only real disappointment on this first disc is the Gato Barbieri number--sort of "old" new-age pop, and distorted at that. Gato is best represented by his music for "Last Tango in Paris" and his memorable (if eccentric) appearance in the video release, "Calle 54."

I ordered this CD because it had on it the first song I remembered when I was a little girl. It brought back wonderful memories.

for anyone who loves traditional jazz, louis armstrong, jack teagarden or big sid catlett, this is a must have! five stars.
recorded in 1947, the sound is superb and makes you wish you were there. armstrong and teagarden were inspired playing with each other. barney bigard plays very well also. excellent liner notes.
this was originally a two 78rpm box that came out in the early 50s. the only minus is that two songs from the original were left off the cd due to time/space. turn the sound up to 11.

I have been a fan of the firehouse five plus 2 (two) for over 50 years and this CD lived up to the high standards that this group always performs. They are the very best traditional jazz band I have ever heard.

It was in the Fall of 1956 that three New Orleans musicians journeyed to the West Coast for the annual Gene Norman-Frank Bull Jazz Festival. They were veteran trumpet-man Al Hirt; a fourteen-year-old phenomenon on trumpet, Warren Luning, Jr.; and another veteran from the New Orleans jazz scene, clarinetist Pete Fountain. Among those in the audience that proceeded to flip over the playing of the New Orleans visitors was young Lawrence Welk, Jr. Forthwith he goes to the old man and says, "Dad, this you've gotta hear!" (Or words of similar import.) So Larry, Sr. put down his accordion, turned off the bubble-machine, and made the trip to the auditorium where the jazz bash was being held; and that night an idea was born. To wit: why not build a dixieland ... Read More:

See my review on "Jazz a Plenty"--personnel and renditions are solid--just like being at Nick's in Greenwich Village in the l960's or earlier. Brunis is one of the top trombonists in the tailgate tradition. I knew and heard him in Chicago in the late 50's. Grandpa Spells
