McTell may have lost quite a few steps since the 1920s and '30s by the time this music was recorded, but he was still in excellent form. The disc has a solid song selection and shows us that, had McTell have lived just a few more years, he could have been a huge star in the Country Blues revival. His twelve string guitar playing is exquisite. In my opinion, McTell and Gary Davis are the greatest twelve string guitarists in history; better than Leadbelly and Jesse Fuller. This disc and "Pig 'N' Whistle Red" are extremely enjoyable, but one should buy the JSP McTell box set first!

Back in the late 70's Johnnie Winters pulled Muddy Waters out of semi-retirement to record three great CD's on the Blue Sky label. When back in the studio Muddy noted that it made him feel so good that it made him 'Hard Again', hence the title for the first and best CD of the series. All are recordings using a live to tape method, which suites the blues and in particular Muddy extremely well. The backing band is excellent, sound quality is outstanding and Muddy is top of form. Each CD has a slightly different feel and each in the set gets a little weaker then the previous. This is relatively speaking given that Hard Again is easily one Muddy's best albums and one of the top ten blues CD's ever made - seriously good stuff. If you can only ... Read More:

Cephas and Wiggins are masters of the oldest form of blues, the melodic Piedmont acoustic style that has stylistic links to the black string bands of Colonial America. Here Cephas' resonate vocals and guitar licks are echoed by Wiggins' harmonica pyrotechnics in a program of originals and well-selected older gems. One of their better CDs.

72 tracks on this compilation, and not a single flaw.
The Plantation Recordings from the early 40's and his late 70's albums produced by Johnny Winter are all fine, because again, he just couldn't open his mouth and sing a BAD song.
But leave these ones alone, and get The Chess Box (Everything he has done for Chess between 1947-1972). Just like other Chess artists (Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy) - the Chess years are his best by far, and the tracks put chronologically here serves you ear and historic sense great.
The music here is absolutely astonishing - Muddy's clear, throaty famous vocal and whining slide work, Little Walter's/James Cotton's weeping harmonicas, Otis Spann on piano and all the other members of this legendary ... Read More:

I picked this up at a Border's that was getting rid of its cd's. Everything was half of half, and I just figured even if there were two or three cuts worth listening to, it would be a bargain. Boy was I wrong! This double disc set is all worth listening to. The traditional disc is more my cup of tea, but this cd is an explosion of sound that will make you want to hear it over and over again. Great compilation.

I don't know what to say, but as far as Juke-Joint blues goes, this album is perfect, I mean flawless. I first saw T-Model Ford perform live when he came to my college campus. His unorthodox playing style, haunting voice, and lyrics which represent his twisted personality, are all things that make up a great bluesman, a real bluesman. All of these things are expressed to the 10th degree in this album.
This is his first album, which he didn't record until he was 75 years old, and in my opinion it is his best. "Cut You Loose" is in my opinion the best track on the album. If your looking for unrefined blues, the kind that makes you want to down a bottle of whiskey and howl at the moon, then this is for you.
Also check out his other fantastic albums, ... Read More:
