In the latest in a long line of first rate work, Rory Block here tackles 13 of Robert Johnson's compositions. All her versions are first rate, remaining faithful to the original classics while injecting her own personality and style at the same time. That's not an easy thing to do as these songs have done over and over by countless artists. Block has covered Johnson before but this is her 1st Cd devoted entirely to the great bluesman. A true 5 star CD here.

I moved to Chicago too late to see Yank but listening to this CD reminds me of why I love the blues. Many if not all of these songs have been recorded many times over but Yank makes them his with his own feel and a great band featuring Odie Payne on drums. Check out "Early in the Morning" it's worth the money just for that song.

I very rarely write in to amazon, but...for anybody who is thinking about buying this disc, do it! Six months ago I ran across an old McDowell record in a used record shop. Without a doubt he is, in my opinion, the most gripping blues musician I've ever heard. The man has an INCREDIBLE voice, plays the guitar beautifully, and writes compelling songs. I've heard blues purists scoff at this album, because he plays an electric guitar on it, but the versions of songs here have all the passion of his classic acoustic versions, (and those acoustic albums of McDowell's are great records too)

This recording appears to be identical to King's earlier recording, "Red Mud", which is his most traditional blues effort (and my favorite of his work). That earlier version would get a 5-star rating from me. This remastered one is, for some reason, missing two of the original tracks -- "Hoodoo Party" and "Bus Station Blues" (copyright issues?). Hence a 1-star penalty.

Skip James was one of the great musicians of his generation and he knew it. His bitterness at his lack of recognition did not prevent him from leaving this artistic last will and testament. Each song displays his remarkable creative range and his originality along with his drive towards artistic perfection. This is music of extraordinary emotional depth and intellectual acuity. It is beautiful and moving and, like all great works of art, allows you to see the world in new ways. Get it!

great compilation album. muddy waters, otis rush, bb king, t-bone walker, and those are the artists on the first 4 songs. each song different than the other, and each one played with precision by a master guitar player. it has an older sound to it, like when muddy waters plugged that amp in for the first time. but like fine wine, as it gets older it gets better. check out the tremendous guitar playing on the last track - see me in the evening - with hound dog taylor providing the riffs.

A reviewer below has made a mistake, or his review was misfiled: This compilation is not to be confused with "King of the Delta Blues SINGERS." THAT is the compilation which contains the alternate take of "Traveling Riverside Blues." It and its companion, "King of the Delta Blues Singers, Volume 2" also have much better mastering than any other Robert Johnson collections that I am aware of. Unfortunately, between them, ten alternate takes have yet to be upgraded from either mastering of the "Complete" collection.
I have not heard "King of the Delta Blues"--I am basing this information on the song sample Amazon has provided. But given the song lineup, this is a confusingly unnecessary product.
