Roy Rogers remains a beloved American hero. He basically played himself. This album includes some wonderful recordings. There are a few older cuts from the 40s and 50s on RCA. But most of the recordings are from the 60s and 70s on Capitol. Dale Evans is on two cuts. There are only a few cowboy songs on this collection. Most are of a country vein. Some of the best cuts are the previously unreleased songs. Where have they been? How come they were in the vaults so long? My favorite is Sunday Kind Of Love. Contrary to some descriptions, Hoppy, Gene, and Me isn't on this album. My beefs are very few. Some information about the recordings, especially the "new stuff," would have been nice. As with too many great albums, you wish it was longer. ... Read More:

This is early Crystal, classic stuff. She's never received the critical appreciation she should have received, but she's put out some very unusual songs, for a country or pop artist. Her two biggest hits, Don't it make my brown eyes blue and Talking in your sleep, are cases in point. The first is almost a jazz piece, with the lilting piano and Crystal's subtle rhythmic changes as a counterpoint, while the second is one of the only hits I know that starts out with a single chord, declarative voice, almost talking, and very slow pace. Loretta Lynn says that no one sings a torch song better than Crystal, and Talking in your sleep provides all the proof you need. It's a great song, and I think it hasn't been recorded much because no one thinks that they can ... Read More:

If you aren't familiar with Chris LeDoux, this is an excellent place to start. This is western music -- not Nashville, but Wyoming. Every song is good -- and Chris's voice is at its peak. This CD is never far from my reach. "Workin' Man's Dollar," "This Cowboy's Hat," "The Last Drive-In," I think I've heard them a thousand times and I still love them.

What can I say, I have been waiting over 40 years to get a good copy of this CD and I have it. It sounds wonderful...Hank Snow does Robert Service fantastic and 40+ years later it still is wonderful to listem too. Packaging for this is 5 star all the way with history, lyrics and photos as I would expect from the Bear Family. It does make you want more when he finishes. I highly recommend this to everyone. Anyone can listen to this.

Just another great gunfighter ballad record, nothing special, nothing spectacular, just great coming from that smooth, tenor, baritone voice of Marty Robbins.Hear Martys smooth natural delivery on the very short, but effective,The Wind Goes,or the tell a story of life on the range,Cry Stampede, and the fatal,Cottonwood Tree.Marty Robbins never ceases to amaze me with every listen, always painting a picture in my mind of the old west. The Drifter is not the best of the gunfighter ballads, however,a must if you own the others.

Before I set down my comments on this 3-disc set I read carefully through the other reviews and while couldn't disagree with the first few 5-star posts, I had made up my own mind that this didn't quite fill the bill for that maximum rating. I had also begun to form the essence of my review when I came to that by Greg Brady, and wouldn't you know it, he essentially (no pun intended) took the words right out of my mouth regarding this so-called "essential" collection. One of at least three on the market purporting to be the essential Johnny Cash collection.
I realize that trying to come up with 75 tracks for an artist with 135 Country hit singles (123 to the end of 1983 - the period covered here), to go along with almost countless memorable album cuts, ... Read More:

This is one of the hard-to-find actual studio albums of JC, buried among the Greatest Hits collections. It's a real treasure though - but you'll have to get used to the concept of a travelogue. Each song is preceded by a narrated introduction which today would sound corny, but on this album it doesn't. The songs are haunting and beautiful. No hits on this one - which makes it better for hard core fans who've heard Ring of Fire enough already.

A nice, but all-too-brief overview of Rex's career. At 10 tracks, it falls far short in covering Rex's time on the country charts. The Top-10 hit "Me and My Broken Heart," arguably one of his finest performances, is missing. There's no excuse for that. Another oversight is the lovely and sentimental "Cup of Tea," his 1981 Top-20 duet with Margo Smith.
Given the fact that this is the only Rex compilation on the market, I'm grateful it exists. But Warner Brothers is notoriously stingy with its catalog. Let's hope one of the reissue labels gets hold of the master recordings and gives us the compilation that we (and Rex!) deserve.
