This album when listened to with a good sound system, along with few distractions will stimulate your mind to think on the greatest "Heroes" in this life. It has been said, "Too often we salute the wrong heroes", (meaning ones that are famous or rich or powerful), when some of the greatest heroes work quietly behind the scenes. Such is the theme track of this album, which stresses well-deserved praise for those who sacrifice their time, talents, and energies to help those that are less fortunate. Other songs of this album, remind us of the love and nuturing of parents, or maybe with sadness those who try everything in this world to find peace, but fail to see the true peace one can have through a meaningful relationship with Christ.

Like many, many other pick-ups of Ernie, this offers hymns with backup that includes the San Quentin prison choir, the Jordanaires, and a mixed choir of professional singers and friends. Great to listen to, but ends too soon. Maybe more of his work will be rereleased like Johnny Cash. Ernie sang in a day when people recorded albums not just singles. Its a shame that more of his work isn't available, but until then decent collections like this will have to keep us satisfied.

Ralph Stanley and his powerful and inspiring band do a great job as always with "Shine On." One of the strong aspects of this album is the versatility of the arrangement styles and harmony styles. I love the old time gospel style of four part harmonies which are showcased well with "Sing Songs about Jesus", and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." Also of course I love the featuring of different lead singers that is always a strong focus of bluegrass music. Ralph II does and excellent job with "My Main Trial is Yet to Come." Ralph II is one, if not the best lead singers in bluegrass music today. He is just as good as the best that Ralph has had over the years.

Songs of Inspiration, Vol. 2

This album has some thirteen songs of inspiration, put together with that great Alabama style. Now, Volume 1 relied heavily on those great old hymns, which was wonderful. Volume 2 has some hymns, such as Church in the Wildwood, Will the Circle be Unbroken and Love Lifted Me (which is worth the purchase price of the album!), but moves out into more contemporary songs, with songs such as If I Could Hear My Mother Pray.

Overall, I found this to be a very good album. It's not the pure collection of old hymns that Volume 1 was, but it is still a wonderful and, yes, inspirational album to listen to. I highly recommend this album!

Roy Rogers Tribute

In the one original song that Roy Rogers sings on this album, he sings "I feel like I've grown up with everyone who's alive and kickin' today." Surely, for anyone who grew up in the 30s, 40s, or 50s, this album is a stupendous find, a return to a beloved voice and some great old familiar songs. But this album should be on the list of essential country and western albums also. It is fair to say that without Roy Rogers, there would never have been any country music. Let us not forget that country music used to be called Country and WESTERN, and Roy Rogers (not to discount a few others, like Gene Autry) is the reason why.
