I honestly can't think of when I've heard a bluegrass band play with such empathy and virtuosity. Maybe the last time was more than a decade ago in Tucson, Arizona, but I know I haven't heard anything here in New York City that remotely comes close to The Del McCoury Band. Until last Saturday, when this wonderful band played a great set - which included celebrated banjo musician Bela Fleck on one number - at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. Much of their set consisted of music from this CD and earlier releases from 2001, including a great cover version of a song written by legendary British folk rocker Richard Thompson. Del has a great tenor voice and is a fine guitarist too. But maybe more importantly, his superb musical talents also run in the ... Read More:

This is the rubber room and I love it ! Porter Wagoner is one of my all time favorites because he's one of those truly rural singers that you just don't hear anymore. His singing and narration have a sincere , genuine quality that cannot be imitated. I was already familiar with "The Caroll County Accident" , "The Cold Hard facts Of Life" , "Jim Johnson" and "My Many Hurried Southern Trips" all of which are excellent. The other 25 songs on this disc are really good as well.I enjoyed "George Leroy Chickashea" and "Indian Creek" which would both be considered politically incorrect by today's standards. This disc includes a booklet that features the album covers from which the songs on this compilation were selected. This is a great package of Porter Wagoner's ... In 1957, seeing the runaway success of his previous gospel effort (Hymns) Tennessee Ernie Ford decided he should record another gospel album. Re-assembling the vocal choir and arranger Jack Fasinato, Ernie decided the theme of the album would be "spirituals." The result: an album with all the wonderful vocal flourishes and phrasing of `Hymns' but with more rhythm and bounce. I consider this to be the greatest gospel album ever recorded. Using the ingenious Sinatra-Riddle formula, the singer, vocal choir, and orchestra become co-equals of sorts, and engage in some clever musical interplay. However, the highlight is, as always, the booming baritone of Tennessee Ernie Ford. A superlative vocalist by technical standards, he gently caresses the notes in "Stand ... Read More:

This is one of the BEST CDs I've ever owned! Each and every song is a Blessing. 'Midnight Cry' is one selection I play over and over again, as is 'Rise Again.' Absolutely Beautiful!!!
Ivan Parker's voice is one of the best I've heard in a long time - he puts so much feeling and emotion in every note! I've bought copies for friends and family -- I just have to share the joy of listening to these songs!

I expected to hear live Grammy performances from the last 50 years. Instead, all of the songs were the original recordings and all were from the same time period - the 1960's.
