The very first thing that hit me upon listening to this cd is how wonderful are the sonics! This cd was well recorded, well engineered, and mastered. If you have ever owned a cd which just plain sounds really really good on your stereo when played, then you will understand what I mean when I say the word 'sonics'.

Bill Evans was taken with this particular trio often comparing it to his very first one with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian. Anyone familiar with Bill's early history will know that his first trio was vaunted as something special and ended entirely too soon with the sudden death of Scott LaFaro. Enjoyable but not as jazzy as I expected. I understand why after reading the liner notes--Brubeck wanted to do a Christmas album from music he loved as a child, with the whole family around a piano in the parlor. An old-fashioned Christmas.

Having discovered June Christy only a year or so after she passed away in the early 90's, and having had so many holiday albums and CD's over the years, this one has to be the best. For those who long for a non-religious holiday album with sharp arrangements, witty lyrics, and superb singing need look no further! I can't remember a holiday album with all the "stars aligned" from conception through rendition. The vocal stylizings of June Christy, probably too difficult for many other vocalists to emulate, save perhaps Sarah Vaughan or Keely Smith, explains why others simply haven't tried to re-create this wonderful ode to the sophisticated holiday season.

This isn't much of a review, I just downloaded the 47 tracks of 'MJQ: 40 Yrs', and it sounds GREAT!. I am amazed that Amazon is posting six reviews of A DIFFERENT ALBUM under this product listing. All 6 reviews are for an MJQ album called "Collaboration", which is by the same artist, but is definitely NOT the product listed, namely "MJQ: 40 Years". Since there are ZERO reviews of the actual item, at this time, I wanted to at least let you know, it's quite fine! That's very succinct, I know, but at least I'm talking about the actual item listed, not SOME OTHER ALBUM !!!

This is as good as music gets. The first CD is an introductory one, with some dated material, but once you get beyond the 40's, every song is a winner. This contains several Greatest Hits sets all in one place. Just brilliant stuff, to which I'd give my highest recommendation.
