I have almost all her Lp's / cd's and now I try to get everything that I can get on DVD. I was excited and thrilled to get this dvd, simply because you cant hardly get anything from Sarah singing during the 50's and 60's on dvd or videotape.
This dvd is my favorite...her voice is phenomenal, her musicality is superb...not to mention her talent.
Lets make it clear folks, she was the best ever!! All the good musicians and singers admit that!
Not any singer nowadays comes close to what Sarah did!
She was a still is my hero!
Buy this DVD, and enjoy her version of Maria, Baubles Bangles and Beads and songs like Lover Man, I feel Pretty, sometimes I'm happy etc.
And for those who never saw Sarah live performing, ... Read More:

Gene Lees wrote on Liner Notes that John Coltrane had on occasion expressed puzzlement over such descriptions of himself as "best of the angry tenors." He once said: "I guess they say that because I play the horn hard." And if I may add, he played with love and dedication that shows in every note, his interpretations radiate simple elegance and respect to the material.
"Ballads" is a collection of eight striking tunes recorded in 1961 and 1962 by John Coltrane Quartet featuring himself on tenor sax, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, with the special participation of a guest musician, bassist Reggie Workman on "It's Easy To Remember," one of my absolute favorite tunes from one of my favorite composers ... The Piano playing of Ahmad Jamal is excellent. However in the background and only on the songs that have percussion in the background, you get to hear this little mechanical bip-bot pop poop like bongo drum. Like a small child playing on a toy snare. It is so horrible to have to hear this accompaniment in the background! Oh what can the matter be? Why Billy Boy didn't we get a regular drummer to accom Jamal and the bass? Soft brushes for the ballads, etc. What a disappointment. The CD would be better off w/no accompanying rhythm then to have this noise in the background.
This beautiful album was recorded on September 16 and 17 (not originally released as the data on the amazon claimed at the time I wrote this review)- Kenny Burrell, a true giant of mainstream and moderately modern jazz guitar really shines here in the illustrious company of Richard Davis on bass and Roy Haynes on drums.
Some of the songs are really swinging, some are beautifully sad, some are pretty darn modern, but the general feeling of the album would be - in my interpretation - warm. The cozy tone of the leader's guitar really enriches his fanciful solo flights as well as the numbers where the rest of the trio has a larger role.
Initially issued on LP in 1960, the album was re-released in 1966 under the title "Man at Work", with ... Read More:

I agree with the reviewer below me, the sound of this remastered CD is excellent and perfect for this kind of choral jazz music. I have to say that it took me a while to really get into these guys but now I am completely hooked! To me, there has never been a group that sounds quite like these cats. I have never heard the great Percy Heath sound as good as he does on this recording. It was an absolutely, incredible performance! I'm blown away everytime I hear this album and decide to turn up the bass a bit. Man, it's a trip to see how fast and tight he is. However, the whole group led by legendary Milt Jackson really is as close to perfection as your going to get in this recording. I would have purchased this CD just to hear the song "Django"! Also, their version of "Autumn in ... Read More:

This CD has 13 old standards plus Johnny Smith's composition 'Walk, Don't Run!' which was a big hit for the Ventures. Johnny Smith's guitar playing is just great. The songs are all short, so there are no lengthy solos, but the guitar solos are all gems. Some musicians can handle slow romantic, songs but not fast numbers. Others do well on uptempo material but bog down on ballads. Johnny Smith excels with both. On the slower numbers, his tone is beautiful and he is able to keep the pulse of the song going even when the beat is slow. On the uptempo numbers, his playing is amazingly fast and clean. The focus is very much on Johnny Smith, but the backing, and brief solos, by the rest of the group are quite good. It is interesting to hear Johnny Smith backed up by a second guitarist. The two ... This is a very good collection of the classics. The tunes are timeless... what else can one say about these. I'm glad I made the purchase.

Typically satisfying live release during Davis's early-mid career finds one of many all-star lineups dazzling and rarely over-embellishing a few stirring ballads to contrast the up-tempo numbers found on a companion disc.
