Anyone who thinks only Bill Evans' early work is his best
hasn't listened to Evans' final album, The Last Waltz,
the 8 disc box set of the 9 night gig he did at the
Keystone Korner in S. F., Sept. 1980, 11 days before his
death. The material on this album is as familiar as the
song titles, (which have so much to do with the bond he'd
established with his listeners), some versions of which he
played 2 or 3 times. The artistry and lyricism are equal to
his best earlier work, and the emotional intensity exceeds it.
although there will never be another Scott LaFaro, bassist,
Marc Johnson and drummer, Joe LaBarbera, make this as good a
Trio as Evans has ever had.

What do you get when you team one of the most beautiful voices in the history of Jazz music (or any musical genre for that matter) with perhaps the greatest trumpet player in Jazz history - pure magic! I can throw out all the cliche's and hyperbole in the world trying sway the rest of you out there who don't own this yet to purchase it immediately. However, what am I going to say that will trump all of the critics (both pros and Amazon ams alike) who give this recording five stars w/out hesitating a second after they listen to it the first time?

This is the Brubeck Quartet album I listen to most often. Abounds with good solos from Brubeck and Desmond. Years ago I thought some Brubeck harmonies here to be too harsh; but now I find those harmonies beautiful - harshly beautiful, - and thrilling. I particularly like the Brubeck solo at the end of St. Louis Blues; the Muse pushed him to take chances, and his solo's dronelike quality seems dramatic, even apocalyptic. In "For All We know", Brubeck's solo has dense block-chords, and they usually disturb the animals in my house; but those harmonies make me feel something deep and bittersweet, no matter how many times I hear it. Bluntly: most of the Desmond solos are flat-out masterpieces, jewels of lyric simplicity. The Muse was on a roll, pouring inspiration ... Read More:

While the melodies are lovely, and the music is well played, there is something missing from this recording. It doesn't quite reach the level of Gershwin's dramatic musicianship. Nice to listen to, but it would not be my first choice for this opera.

This is a great album with some of my favourite performances of all time: "All of me" and "Love me or leave me". Teddy's piano playing matches Lester style amazingly well.

After "Time Out," Brubeck extends his innovation with unusual (yes, that's the word!) time signatures. This album is as essential as "Time Out," as it is impeccably performed by a group obviously comfortable with each other. As a bonus, it's very well recorded (early 60s) and remastered.
My personal fave is "Unsquare Dance" in 5-time, an anti-toe-tapping rebuttal to 4/4 comfort music. (Too bad the other version of "Unsquare Dance - in 7! - isn't on this disk as well.)

The CD is excellent for James Bond music fans. The music is not the original title tracks, however the orchastration is very good and the music unmiskabably BOND.
Release Date November 22, 1989
The CD is exactly as I expected. I had listened to some tunes from one like it that a friend has. Service, shipping, etc, was fine.
