George Shearing entertained countless people in the twentieth century with his excellent piano playing; his blindness never discouraged him. Not only is he a hero for enriching our lives with his fine work; his artistry provides an excellent example for younger emerging artists to study so that they can better themselves.
The CD is a "two-fer" CD; this means that we get all the tracks from two of George Shearing's record albums: Black Satin and White Satin. Awesome!
The CD track set begins with the ten tracks from Black Satin. "The Folks Who Live On The Hill" gives us a perfect beginning to the CD. The lush musical arrangement sounds so smooth; this is easy music at its very best with an emphasis on George's piano playing. ... Read More:

Ultimate Diva Collection: The Diva Series may not be complete but it sure does do a fine job with the material it offers us! I wish they had added a song or two to make this more substantial; but the sound quality is good and I like that artwork, too.
Ella Fitzgerald, The First lady Of Song, gives us a live track of "How High The Moon." "How High The Moon" charms me completely when Ella sings this; she could sing the phone book and when Ella was done you'd be applauding and cheering for more! "How High The Moon" is a huge highlight of this CD; and Ella scats wonderfully, too. Sarah Vaughan also weighs in with "Lullaby Of Birdland;" this too has always been a favorite of mine and Sarah Vaughan certainly does this one up right! Sarah never misses ... Read More:

All three discs are great, but the third (instrumental and jazzy)is outstanding. Old enough to be exposed to the popular Mercer tunes and understandingly biased regarding the commercialization of his stuff, I was thrilled to hear these renditions by the great artists selected for this disc. Worth the price for just the last disc-so consider the other two as bonuses.

This CD is excellent! I stumbled across it while looking for Joe Sample's latest CD. I listened to short samples while in the store and was hooked! Although I love the entire CD my favorite tracks are Big Noise from Winnetka, Marrakech, Le Pont Royal and the two remixes of the first two tracks. They should invent a whole new jazz category because this is not lite jazz (contemporary) or traditional jazz.

I don't where these other reviewers are coming from. They could be hired guns. This is obviously Mulligan's date as the opening of Chocolate Sundae would indicate. Getz's lyrical playing is overshadowed a bit by Mulligan's more robust tone which contains much lyricism as well. It's a great swinging session. Harry Edison, Herb Ellis, and Oscar Peterson are the other major soloists.----------- If you want more Mulligan with this tone and this type of groove, with no other major soloist except the pianist try JERU,MIDAS TOUCH and DREAM A LITTLE DREAM. Also with Dave Brubeck- AT THE BERLIN PHILHARMONIC. Gerry used a stiffer reed for a more refined sound on his Concert Jazz Band recordings and seems to be playing with it on Dave Brubeck's THE LAST SET AT NEWPORT ... Read More:

One thing about this album that is perhaps under-recognised is the superb quality of the recording - this is possibly the best recorded double bass sound I've ever heard, and the percussion is crystal clear (perhaps a mixed blessing, depending on one's opinion of how many bells and chime strings are strictly necessary on a couple of the tracks). The key to this album is to approach it with a sense of humour; there is a degree of appropriate respect shown to the Bach material, but once you realise that the superficially "hokey" treatment given to the Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring theme on "Precious Joy" is a colossal musical joke rather than a serious attempt, it really does give you an understanding of the reality behind the rather straight-laced image of the MJQ

I heard "Peace Piece" on a local radio station for the first time. I hunted Bill Evans down on Amazon and found this terrific album. It is great music to have playing in the background when you are trying to concentrate.
