Miles Davis was one of the coolest men of our time. This was Davis' third collaboration with Gil Evans and was recorded towards the end of 1959, and this music is both original and remarkably conspicuous. "Concierto de Aranjuez" is the centrepiece around which the whole album was created, and it sucks you in right from the start. This version also includes a bonus track called "Song for Our Country" and another two-track run-through of "Concierto", which blends jazz and classical in such a way that it reaches surrealistic heights of near musical perfection. I've never been to Spain, but this incredibly rich music has me considering planning my next vacation there.

It's really hard to disagree with most of the reviewers; this is Miles at his lyrical and contemplative best, and John Coltrane is really spicing the things up with his rough tenor; contrasting the leader's horn very effectivelly...
And yes, this is the album that has both the magnificent version of Monk's 'Round Midnight and the beautiful and extremely creative version of children song Bye Bye Blackbird! But there is also boppish Ah-Leu-Cha, sentimental and ironic All of You...
Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on the bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums are a rhythm section at the same time powerfull and subtle, ideal for supporting and inspiring the horns...

I am not a Jazz aficiando or any kind of fan, but i've always found Julie L's music entertaining. Her CDs are in a group i play from time to time, usually while driving. Her attitude demands attention. the music is mostly old standards. The music and she are icons of a time when the lyrics actually were listened to.

This CD has one of my favorite pieces from the 1950's, Poinciana. It's just as delightful now as it was then, & I am delighted to have this item back in my collection of music.

I expected to love this album. I love Coltrane. But it's just not gelling. For whatever reason, the album comes across as a jam-session, and not a serious musical production. The balance is uneven and the sound is muted and cloudy. The majority of the album carries no understandable theme or idea. I know it's jazz, and it's supposed to be loose, but this is just frustrating!
Honestly, my favorite part of the album was Tyner's piano playing. He's a genius! I'll be looking into more of him.

Somewhat difficult to get into the groove of listening, because the set is more of an academic study of the recording sessions with these two giants of the jazz world.
I will edit the set to separate the listenable from the historic; some charts stop in the middle in order to begin another take.
This set also includes several takes of the same chart, as well as different solo break overdubs.
If you're looking for a set to immediately have for an evening's playlist, you'll need to spend some time picking and choosing. You may prefer to purchase their studio CDs individually. However, it's well worth the journey.
At the end of the day, it's Miles Davis during a very introspective yet lyrical point of his ... Read More:

Some people affirm that the early years of Dave Brubeck's production are his best. If you agree, this may well be your best Brubeck in one disc: Blue Rondo, Take Five, Unsquare Dance...

This is a CD I have always wanted and desired the soundtrack from day one as a young child. I totally love it and every track on it. Glad to have the original CD as part of my collection. I am very satisfied and pleased with this purchase. Love it and it is definitely a 5 star purchase and a Keeper...great CD. Great sound.

Evans is peerless when it comes to jazz ballads, to my ears, and here's a full album of his mellow mastery.
Moonbeams is perfect for those who love quiet, introspective music, and is superb background sound for dimming the lights and so on. It is also much more than that. Evans' genius is his inchoate ability to invest almost endless emotion in his work. All the listener need do is let the notes and harmonies flow in, and the spell is cast; there is deep feeling on this record, and many unique meloodic and harmonic choices. Re: Person I Know and Moonbeams are just two of the highlights from an album with no weak spots. Evans had a fine rhythm section here; Motian is a fabulous brush player, and Israels fills La Faro's sadly empty shoes more than credibly.
