Other reviewers here have done a better job than I could by submitting informed and eloquent reviews of this fine album. So this isn't a review--it's a suggestion. Amazon offers this album together with Bossa Antigua for $22.97. Even less if you go for the used CD option. Both albums will satisfy those who love the marriage of Cool Jazz with Bossa Nova. Perfect book-ends.

Enjoyable but not as jazzy as I expected. I understand why after reading the liner notes--Brubeck wanted to do a Christmas album from music he loved as a child, with the whole family around a piano in the parlor. An old-fashioned Christmas.

i really appreciate this album. joe pass grooves, and i have probably listened to this version of giant steps half a million times. very much recomended for guitarists: not sure if you'd enjoy this if you don't play guitar, but hey, give it a shot: they're great arrangements of great tunes.

Bill Evans is my hands-down, absolute favorite pianist, and maybe my favorite jazz musician ever. I love Marian McPartland's show, and I was lucky enough to catch her in concert last year. Once I discovered that Evans had been on McPartland's show- well, how could I not buy this disc? One of the best of her shows, this is an hour of sheer enjoyment and an education into Evan's thinking about music. Ten stars.

By all accounts, the life and career of Chet Baker was an amazing saga. How does someone go from a movie star handsome trumpet idol of the fifties to a nearly homeless, but still performing drug addict? A couple of great biographies of Chet Baker try to answer that question; I can't. I prefer to concentrate on his place in the history of jazz trumpet. He was certainly the the most intuitive trumpeter since Louis Armstrong; he did not read music, understand chord changes, nor compose. Stories abound of sidemen, including Russ Freeman, having to give Chet his opening note. However, once he heard a tune, he owned it; his ear was exceptional and was the foundation of his improvisational skills. Trumpet purists complain that his ideas are simple, that he ... Read More:

I first read about Miles in Mojo (the UK music mag). Their article, "How To Buy... Miles Davis" noted that this was a perfect starting point for the curious. I made a note of this. Then, after scanning the net for suggestions for music that resembled early Chicago's jazz-rock, I ran across some tracks from Bitches Brew and Tribute to Jack Johnson. Man, that stuff blew my mind! I wanted to try out Miles' material. Rather than starting out by purachising his late 60s/70s electric work,I decided to begin with this set to get a better sense of the man's career.
Disc 1, in my humble view, is a rather conservative affair. It's jazz, and I can't particlarly fault that. But for someone yearning for electric disorderly conduct, it's like the calm before ... Read More:

This cd is great because it is truly honest and shows just how gifted some of these jazzers were back in the 50's. I mean the playing is so elegant, tight, complex and just so entertaining that i was shocked!. The music is a great misxture of swinging and be bop jazz as it's meant to be. Cd sound is great. And all the soloist are of the first order. Really a recommended gemm that should be in every jazz fan collection.

My first encounter with Chet Baker was when I listened to Volume 5 of the 'ROUND MIDNIGHT' series, which is now, sadly out of print;
Here was the first 'white', proper, Bebop player that I had heard.Being a jazz afficianado, I presumed with opinionated predujice, that he was a black player, because we all know that bebop is not the domain of white boys. How wrong I was.
His performance on CHET BAKER IN TOKYO(LIVE) does not disappoint -he has been accused of being too melodic & not technical enough. Listen to his interpretation of MILES DAVIS' 'Four' on disc 2 of this recording. He is both technical & melodic. To play melodic requires a considerable degree of expertise, technical, no ??
His track on side 2 : BROKEN WING also reinforces the man as a premium ... Read More:

I'm no jazz fan per se... I just liked that original "Soul Sauce". They called it "Guachi Guaro" ...to me it sounded like "What chu wadda". When my girl friend expressed an interest in having this, it was not a difficult decision to go for this digital version. I highly recommend that you under 60 people, who have no clue about Cal Tjader and latin jazz, listen to a clip of "Soul Sauce" and what ever other title on this album strikes your fancy.
